Hello to everyone

I have posted a couple of times already and never really had a chance to introduce myself. Currently living in chicago. We have two RES named ED and LUPITA (name change pending sex determination). The turts are about 4 months old. I am very happy with them and they are soo cute. I feel like a parent almost. If it was not for this forum, I would be totally lost, so thanks to all you guys .

I visited a locol petsmart in the city today and was dissapointed by what I saw. There was like a aquarium setup and I would say roughly 10-15 gallons, it was rectngular and it held 7 fully grown RES and Cooters, roughly around 10-12 inches. There was only water enough to cover their feet. There was a single light source and all of them were huddled, seemed like they were struggling to get some light. One of the turtle's shell was grey and did not look very healthy. I was really disappointed.

Unfortunate, what you saw at that petsmart is what we all see in so many other pet stores. What's worse is that the salepeople don't know anything about caring for turtles and misguide new turtle owners into buying improper habitats for the turtles.

Hopefully, more people will do research before going out to buy turtles. This is by far the best site I've found with great information on the proper care for turtles.

well I did talk to the manager at the store there, but she said that's the way the setup has been for a very long time. I tried to tell her what was actually necessary to house soo many sliders but she seemed very confronted. So I didn't say another word and just took off. I'm not going to that PETSMART again.

Wow, a Petsmart? I'm surprised. The staff at the Petsmart nearest me said they won't even sell them because they're too hard to take care of. (They just sell the supplies for them).

If you explained your concern is for the turtles would she look at some care sheets if you gave them to her? Pet stores usually have a vet that they bring their animals to if necessary. The Petco here even has a sign saying who the vet is. Perhaps if you found out the vet, you could tell your concerns to him/her. There's always reporting the store to the authorities...

Welcome aboard. I'm glad that at least you realize how to care for your turtles. Unfortunately, we can't save them all. I just wish that the people who inform others had their info right first.

I know how you guys feel, even I thought a nation wide pet store would have some idea of how to treat most of their animals. I think this is the first time I've seen RES treated badly at petsmart. I did find the name of the vet today and I will try to give them a call today and let you guys know how it goes.
