Hi ladies and gents,

I joined about a week ago, and noticed everyone is coming here to say hi. So I'm doing the same. My name is Sidney Scott. Sometimes I'm also called Skittles(love the candy). I'm 24 yrs old. I'm in the U.S. Army, I fly on and maintain a Boeing CH-47d Chinook helicopter. Second largest helicopter in the world(largest in the US). Anyway, I live in Texas but I'm currently in Iraq. I've had my girl since she was a baby( I'd say two maybe three weeks old). She is the coolest thing and is my only child. The only advise I really want to give and is pretty important in my eyes. Turtles in general can cost alot more than just a couple hundred bucks. For example; L.T. (her name) goes to the vet once a year(couple hundred right there), the tank I'm getting built will cost $5,000. Granted, thats extreme. But, they run anywhere in the $500-$1000 range if not more. Filtration, the bigger the tank the more filters you will need. The point is, look at the big pic when getting a pet of any kind. Turtles live a long time. Plan before hand instead of reacting to a problem. The biggest plan would have to be; put money off to the side for emergencies(they do happen)! For the most part, I love everything about my turtle. She gets all the attention. The money part is the only drawback, thank goodness for a good paycheck. Anyways, I like the site, it has always been a good spot to get good info. It's a vast improvement over what the old site was before. Everybody take it easy and say hi to your turtles for me.

Welcome! Great advice. I have had my turtle for almost 2 months. I rescued him from someone who was dumping him off at Petco cause they were sick of him. I have learned, they are an expensive, yet rewarding pet. Zeke constantly amazes me.

Hi Sidney! My name is Elizabeth and my age is private! I live in Texas with a dog, a cat, a husband and lovely 3 year old RES. All were rescues.

You are right about the expense, though I've seen where some real creative and handy types on here have created nice habitates for practically nothing. We just spent upwards of $1,000 on a nice tank setup for Spot and are about to spend GOK for a nice outdoor pond. It's a lot of fun, though. I don't regret a dime of it. Spot has more personality than the rest of us put together - he deserves a nice habitat!

You are amazing to keep a RES in a place like Iraq. I assume she's there with you. Have you found a vet there that can handle a RES? I've had a hard time finding one that knows much about them in Texas.

Hi Sydney, It's cool that your in the army and all that stuff. Ive only had my RES for about 21 days now, the pet store said that my RES is about 6 months old to 1 yr. old. This website has been a real help to me, and now I'm going to make sure it's also helpful to other people as well. By the way my name is Joseph, AKA "Turtle Expert" and I can Help You in any way I can.

Spotsmamma,
We can't bring our pets with us. L.T. is in good hands though. The family watching over her, has experience with reptiles. I haven't seen her in about a year now, Miss her!

Welcome! Are you coming home any time soon? My boyfriend was in Iraq for about 14 months. The worst 14 months of my life. I've never been much of a nail biter, but by the end, I was about done in. Anyway, thanks for your service. Because of people like you, I don't have to answer to authority!

Thanks Sidney. The two I've tried so far were recommended our mammal vet. Next time I'll try one from a list on the Urgent Care forum on this site. Since I'm in the Dallas area the Central Texas locations would be a REALLY long drive for Spot and me but if we're ever in the area I'll keep them in mind.

Hey, CountryGirl68 how did you get the list of your pets and a sentence that you want on the bottom of your reply(s). Example: Lary & Eddie O
Proud owners of pearl gouramis, 1 pleco and 1 RES

It's awesome, Jellyman. Little dudes are just eggs, we leave 'em on the beach to hatch, and then — koo-koo ka-choo! — they find their way back to the Big Ol' Blue.
