Hello everyone,
I am new here, just registered today. I have a baby RES Jacob and a Lhasa-Apso Terrier, Bandit, who is 16. I had another RES Crenshaw up until today. The poor little guy had pnemonia and didn't make it, I think he was about a year old. I am in the process of getting Jacob a new setup, and came on this site to find out about heaters and filters etc. I am also thinking about purchasing another RES, a mature adult male, but I am not totally sure yet. Hope to talk to everyone soon

Welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear about your last RES. :( You can find all the information you need about basic setup and requirements through the link at the top of the page ("RES Basic Care"). Take some time to read the guides there and if you have any questions, ask away. :)

Basically you want to get the biggest tank you can afford (when you're RES is fullgrown it will require at least a 60 to 70 gallon tank). You will also want a water heater so you can maintain a constant temperature (78-80 degrees for babies and around 75 degrees for adults). Get a good filter since turtles are very messy. And a basking platform is a must. The turtle should be able to climb all the way out of the water to dry off and bask under a heat lamp and a UVB lamp.

Also I would avoid getting another turtle (especially an adult if you just got a baby). Your turtle will be just fine by himself. Turtles tend to like having their own space. You will also need twice the space for 2 turtles (like a 120 to 200 gallon). Enjoy the web site! :D

Greetings! Glad to meet you. I agree with DavidY. Instead of getting another turtle, shower Jacob with all your attention. Often (most of the time?) two turtles in the same tank will fight - then they have to be separated. If you're cool with maintaining two completely separate setups - then more power to you!
