He's probably shedding his skin. What is the temperature of the water and how much are you feeding it?

You should really look into getting a heater now that the weather is cooling. Stable temps are VERY important in maintaining a healthy turtle.

What is a good temp. for her? I have a heater but the pet store says she doesn't need it. It gets so confusing trying to get the correct information. I am looking for her a 55 gallon tank as she has outgrown the one she has. Thanks so much.

The people at the pet store are wrong! That is excaclty what they told me. But i was reading on this site before i went there and i knew i needed a heater for the cold winter here in MN. Stable temps for you turtle would be 76-78 degrees. And my turtle is also shedding too! Looks like be have a lot in common!:)

One cause of excessive skin shedding is poor water quality. What size tank do you have and what kind of filter? How often do you change the water?

Of course, a certain amount of skin shedding is normal but it shouldn't be constant and heavy.

I never trust the people at the pet store. Like everyone else said. Excessive shedding is bad, but every now and then is perfectly normal.

Spending $20 on a water heater will save a lot of problems in the long run. Water temperature is SO critical to a turtle's health & is honestly the cheapest health insurance you can buy for them. Make sure you have a thermometer too, so you can make sure the heater is maintaining the temp of the water correctly.
