Hi, my res is fairly sick, i Think it has R.I. :(

I'm thinking of getting him to a vet, I've phoned Links Road http://www.thelinksroadanimalclinic.com/index.php, they've given me a quote of 75$ for visit plus around 30$ for the medicine...

do any of you guys know of a cheaper place for a herp vet in toronto area?

I'm in college right now and really don't have much money....but i'll try to ask my parents for it if tere is really no other option

Here are some other sources for herp vets in Canada. If you can find another close by you might give them a call. But $100 to treat a sick turtle doesn't sound too bad to me.

When I took my turtle to get treated for RI the visit + drugs was about $113.

One thing to watch out for at vets' is an injection of vit A. Many times that can do more harm than good in the form of an overdose and can be lethal. If your turtle is displaying any signs of vit a deficiency, discuss other options than the shot including cod liver oil, eye drops, and supplements.

Good luck! Vet visits aren't cheap and it can be tough when they're unexpected but it really is your turtle's best shot.

ok, i will keep you posted later :)

a quick question about the cod liver oil, how do you use it?

squirt the stuff into the water and then let your turtle swim in it? or dab it with a cotton swab and cover the turtle with it?

You're sure he has a Vit A deficiency? If the eyes are swollen or closed, use a q-tip to apply some to the eyelid once or twice a day for a few days. If he's eating, put a little on a few pellets or other food that he'll eat. You don't need to put it on all the food every time (it's high in Vit A, which can be toxic if overdone).

You should be given a basic price quote for how much it will be to have your turtle seen by the vet.

ok, i jsut gave him the first dose

i did it as the vet told me to: flip him over and then squeeze the baytril on the tip of his mouth even though it's close
apparently the medicine will drip into his mouth :S not sure if any of it actually went into his mouth though...hopefully some did

is this how you guys give oral meds?

Sometimes people put them in some food but you have to be sure it doesn' all wash off in the water. You can inject the dose into something like a piece of shrimp or an earthworm. Unless he's really sick he should eat those. I think that's the easiest way if he's still eating.
