About a week ago when I was changing the water for my hatchlings I noticed something weird on Donnys (YBS hatchling) plastron. It is a tiny little pink speck on the lower portion of the plastron. At first I thought the area where the egg sac was absorbed into had re-opened. I dont know what the heck it is, I felt it and it doesnt feel like a growth. It is not soft, and slightly pertrudes. His behavior has not changed at all. He is still eating well, basking with head and limbs extended and is very active. It has grown a bit since I first noticed it, so I thought I'd post some pics and maybe someone knows what it might be...

Heres 3 pictures. I circled it on the first one...

I'm pretty sure it's where his yolk sack used to be. Kinda like a bellybutton. It'll go away as he gets older.

Had his yolk sac been completely absorbed?

Yes his egg sack had been completely obsorbed. He was hatched back in August so he's a few months old. I first noticed it when I examined them(the hatchlings) closely prior to putting them back in the tank after their last water change, as I do each time. He didnt have it the last time I had changed the water, which was around a month ago. While I was changing their water I had them in a "Kitty-litter box" type container w/ about an inch of water. The center of the inside of the container has a little bump where the container is fused. Its hard to explain, but a lot of plastic containers have this, especially cheap ones. Its a bit sharp to the touch. I thought maybe he had brushed up against it and exposed his egg sack hole...??

I dont know.. It hasnt impared his behavior at all, but I am still concerned.

If it is what I think it is, should it re seal on its own or will I need to apply some sort of treatment?

Please any advice welcome!!

Thanks,

Dave

Once the area has healed, if the tissue is healthy, it shouldn't open up again. The size of it or the affected area hasn't changed at all in the week since you've noticed it? If not, and if his behavior hasn't changed, I'd keep an eye on it for now. If you start noticing it growing, or if the area looks like it's getting infected or softer, then I have him looked at.

Keep his water clean, provide a good diet, and make sure he has a lot of opportunity to bask under proper lighting.

Yeah so I get home today and I notice the "mystery" bump has disappeared... It doesn't look infected or anything like that. It just looks like his plastron is completely back to normal.

As far as a good diet goes I've got that covered. I offer all of my turtles a balanced diet of commercial food, LOTS of healthy greens (collards, mustard, and dandelion greens & aquatic plants) and on occasional live protein. They have a heat light(95 degrees @ basking spot) for basking and a UVB/UVA light on during the day. Water heater that keeps their water around 78-80degrees. I've got good filtration and always keep their water crystal clear. I am new to this forum, but not to keeping sliders.

Thank you for all your help and advice guys. This was an odd situation, but it looks like it took care of itself. Hopefully it doesn't come back.

Glad to hear it's gone. Looks like you're doing a great job with him.

I'm not sure what type of basking area you're using, but I would opt for the least abrasive kind... the turtle dock, an acrylic platform or some cork bark come to mind.

For the hatch lings I have a turtle log.

Its one of those floating turtle logs, but I have it elaborately propped in place.

It works great, I don't think it is an issue for them.

Whatever it was I really do think it occurred sometime during the water change.

Thanks,
