Hi, I am new to this web site. I have inherited a large male RES approx. 8" diameter, 16 years old. I have him in an outside pond for the summer (93 gal). I plan to move him into the 125 Gal tank this winter. It is located on a covered patio, outside. Last winter he survived quite well in a 60 gal aquarium in the same location. I am trying to increase the filtration for efficiency and effectiveness. I made a filter out of a 4" plastic pipe with a pump on one end that sits in the tank and a return line on the other end, The pipe is stuffed with a filter medium. This works in the 60 gal but I need a larger, more efficient filter for the 125 tank. I prefer to build my own filter rather than buy a high priced cannister filter. I need some design ideas for an outside filter. Also, I built a stand for the 125 gal tank and included a lower shelf (approx 16" clearance from underside of top) to accomodate a filter. Any ideas?

Hi Larry, how cold are your winters? I believe the most common DIY filters are skippy filters, though most have the same principle. Maybe you can make one using a 5 gallon bucket?

At the bottom of the first post, I show my DIY filter for my pond. I'm sure you can do the same thing for a tank.
