i have 2 res that i just got a week ago. recently one of them has started sticking his neck out and opening and closing his mouth. then last night he started having spasms or something. he was making a strange loud clicking sound with his mouth and would start swimming uncontrollably banging against the side of the tank. he did that all night long and this morning was dead. the other one seems to be fine at the moment. does anyone know what happened and if the other one might catch what he had and die too?

How big is your turtle? 2 inches
How long have you had it? a week

What is the water temperature? i'm not positive. i just got them and haven't had time to set up a proper tank yet. i bought a ten gallon tank and a filter but i hadn't gotten any way to see how warm the water is and so had kept them in the little tank they came in.
Are you using a water heater? no
How much water is in there? about 2 inches
Are you using a water conditioner? no, i have well water that i just put in a little water filter before putting it in their tank. i changed the water every other day
Are you using any filtration? no

What is the basking temperature? i'm not sure
Is there a basking light? yes
Is there a basking platform that is easy to climb on? yes
What kind is it or what is it made out of? it's a little piece of foam noodle that came with them
Is there a UVB light? they were by a window so they got natural sunlight as well as the light

What have you been trying to feed it? i just dropped the little food in that came with them and they ate
When was the last time your turtle ate? i'm not sure about the sick one. but the other one had definitely been eating

How big is the tank/pond/enclosure? very small. it's the little portable tank that they came in
Is the tank near a window? yes
Is the tank in a room with a lot of activity? no

Have you read the Basic Care section? yes
Have you searched the forums for similar situations? yes and someone mentioned ri, but i haven't seen anything about the spasms that mine seemed to be having?

Is there any other unusual activity/symptoms? no

You need to get him into that 10gal asap. Having them by the window will do more harm than good. Not only will the window/screen block any uvb rays, but it can heat the water up pretty fast. I've heard of too many turtles getting cooked that way.

The best thing to do now is read and follow everything in the basic care section.

The one that died sounds similar to a little one I had. The vet said he'd been dying since he hatched. Some of them just won't make it and there's nothing we can do. I tried for a week to nurse him back and he never so much as opened his eyes.

It is SO important to know the water and basking temps. It's essential for a healthy turtle. Go get your setup in gear and let us know the temps and such.
