So Buddy's left hind paw came apart completely for no appearant reason. I rushed him to the vet during my lunch break to get it checked out...It was VERY strange. I could see the flesh and the broken paw...still intacted into the skin had completely came off as if someone had just sliced it off. The vet was at lost for words....he is sending the broken limb to the lab to have it tested...We got some antibotics and a medical solution for Buddy to bathe in. The limb may/may not grow back...I don't know what's going to happen...

That's a different foot from the one that was swollen and red before, isn't it. How's that front foot looking?

oh gosh, do you have any idea how that happened? Do you have other turts in the tank with him? If so, youll need to seperate them, that could be the problem... is there anything sharp that he could have cut himself on?

Sorry to hear this. As far as I know, turtles' limbs don't grow back if they've lost them (I'm referring to the paw and/or arm). When you said the broken limb was being sent to the lab for testing, you don't mean the actual limb was cut off, do you? Is a culture being sent to the lab? Did you mean the nail?

Dr. said for some reason the limbs are loosing blood circulation...they turn dark first...dies and come apart. By limb I meant part of "hand," along with the claws. Dr. said it may or may not grow back. The half paw that came off was sent to the lab.

Whoa!!! I wasn't aware turts could get diabetes? Has anyone ever had to deal with this on this board? What would someone do about it? Does it involve any insulin shots? Just curious!

I notice on that anatomy of a turtle in the general care section that a turtle has a pancreas.
