The shell should be pliable, not soft. Infections have a way of working themselves under scutes, so it can be hard to identify. The shots are still a bit blurry, but it doesn't look like it's shedding. If this is spreading, then I would take him to the vet.

If only this area is "soft", then I would seek out a vet now.

I just want to add that this wasn't a herp vet, and I'm somewhat skeptical of the diagnosis and treatment.

Glad you took him to the vet!

Don't worry.....with good care/food/UVA/UVB/clean/warm water, most turtle shell issues will just grow out eventually. Just make sure to go to the main website www.redearslider.com, scroll down, and read all the articles on there about turtle care so you can provide the best environment for your new little friend!

Tamodine is a wound cleanser that's used on reptiles. It sounds somewhat similar to Betadine. If that is some sort of injury or the beginning to shell rot, I would think it would help.

I was told by Marc that the vet said it was a viral infection. Are oral meds not needed in that case?

Wait a minute---I'm only responding to the information in this thread, which I thought had to do with an area on the shell.

marc, Jenaero has nothing against you. Did you tell her something different elsewhere?

She has not "gone mean." She's responding to what you told her, and the info is different from what you're giving in this thread. Does your turtle have a viral infection and is your turtle on oral meds in addition to the shell problem?
