The fact that he is losing weight sounds really strange to me. Have you scheduled a vet visit yet, just in case?

What's your water temperature?

I guess a vet visit wouldn't hurt but I think after Peanut eats some more he'll gain back his weight. He isn't that much underweigh though, I guess it's because he didn't eat. How much does a vet visit cost??

Depends, some vets can charge up to 75$ and some as low as 40$ just to bring your animal in,and extra money for medcine, xrays etc.

If he is sick and the vet decides that he is going to need treatment, the final cost would probably be around 100$ or more.

Sheba's recent vet visit cost $39 for the visit plus $3 for the iodine solution but like xsavingsaturdayx said, it can vary. Call before you go & see what their rates are just to make sure you aren't in for any nasty surprises! At the same time, you can ask about payment plans too, just in case.

Will Peanut eat anything else besides the pellets or some tuna? Have you tried some feeder fish in the tank or maybe a plant like anacharis? Veggies? Is he eating any cuttlebone?

Anacharis is messy, but if Peanut decides to eat it, you will definitely know! :)

And to add what kristen said, instead of trying to focus on a cheap vet.Focus more on a vet that knows what he is doing when it comes to turtles. When you find a vet, call and ask to speak to the doctor and ask him if he has ever treated turtles.

In my calling around, I found a range from 30 dollars (for a vet who will see a turtle but whom I didn't care for) to 79 dollars (for an emergency clinic). Most of the vets I talked to were in the range of 38-45. As Kristin said, there might be extra charges depending on what's wrong with your turtle. When Napoleon had his first RI, he went to the emergency clinic because that's the only place within three hours that had a herp vet that weekend. I paid 79 for the examination, and an additional 40 dollars for subcutaneous fluids and antibiotics. X-rays would have been an extra 125, which I just couldn't afford, but the vet was fairly certain of the diagnosis without them. When he went to a regular vet for a follow up (the one I didn't like) it was 30 for the exam and 15 for more antibiotics. Check the ARAV and NYTTS lists for vets in your area, and call and ask about prices (as well as whether they regularly deal with turtles).

Also, please let us know what your water temperature is. My tip-off that something was wrong was that Napoleon stopped eating, which was when the water was about 68-72. I didn't know until later that I needed a water heater. 72 doesn't seem that cold for a turtle, and it's actually in the range for a western painted, but it was cool enough that he just stopped eating.

PS I made an appointment for Napoleon for next Thursday with Gary Rothman. He's close by, reasonably priced, an active member of ARAV and regularly treats a few different turtles in the area. I also read his personal mission statement on the website of his practice, and liked his attitude, so I'm at least going to meet him and see.

From the mission statement: "Our pets are our responsibility for their lifetime, not just the few minutes we see them each year. We aim to care for these pets from birth to death, and share with them the time in between.

Our responsibility is not limited to the healing of pets, but also to the nurturing and development of their owners. We need to educate and enlighten all pet owners of the importance of preventive medicine and the necessity for quality pet care."

preventive medicine! Not only does this apply to animals! Sounds like a good vet, especially if he's with ARAV and NYTTS, at least that shows that he took the time to register and is interested. Tell us how it goes! Experiment with a few vets until you find one that you know is good.

Even if they are, they might be able to refer to you to herp vets nearby and offer you additional information.

I'll see what I can do about it. Peanut is basking alot but still very active and eats all his food. But I still don't know why he bled. It was only a little blood it wasn't a huge blood loss that would have terrified me.

My dad says he won't take him to the vet until he finds out what it is and if it happens again. He says that unless he knows that it is serious he will wait. Grrrr parents.

What will it take him to notice that it is serious?
