I'm glad DDT's taking antibiotics. If he has an infection that should help. Do you know what antibiotic he's taking?

My fingers are crossed. Has he eaten anything yet?

Great. That's the one people talk about that's good for RI.

Does anyone know of or ever administered a shot called Amikacin? This is what I'm giving my turtle now, and previously I gave him Ceftazadime. (Change of doctors, clinics). He is eating some each day but still shows the usual signs of RI, including constant basking, floating on the water, often sleeping, yawn, etc.

RI = respiratory infection.

Don't know about the other two medications, Zarlulius. Maybe someone else on the forum does.

Amikacin is the drug of choice for septicemia. Ceftazadime is the generic name for Fortaz---it's considered to be a very good drug, better than Baytril in some instances.

Septicemia is blood poisioning. Amikacin is an antiobiotic that's given intravenously and can be for other conditions besides septicemia (but is is currently what often recommended for that condition). Your vet obviously thinks it will help your turtle. If you've been using it for a while and you don't think it's working, you should contact your vet and discuss your concerns with him.

My vet seems to have said that this is a stronger drug than Fortaz and that's why it's given to him now, since he didn't really improve a whole lot with the Fortaz (though he never got worse from it). She never mentioned Baytril. I might ask her about it when I'm done with the doses of Amikacin.
thanks

a couple days after the 4th/last injection of Baytril last week, i decided to try to feed DDT some dried shrimp (which i normally saved as an occasional snack for the 3 of them) instead of the usual ReptoMin sticks.

He ate some. I don't know if it was a coincidence bc he still wouldn't eat the ReptoMin. Anyway, then he took his first [----] and since then, he's been eating a lot more (like before), doesn't lie around all day, and is generally more active.

I took him back to the vet for a follow-up today, and he recommended that i keep DDT quarantined in his separate tank for another month to make sure he fully recovers.

That's excellent news! I'm so glad he's progressing! Good for you for taking care of him.

Same here.... After the 4th shot of Amikacin Brown pooped a LOT and started eating, swimming, being scared of me when I approach, and all those normal things. It sure makes me happy!
