Post Posted: Tue Oct 09, 2007 10:29 am   My baby is sick again

well, peppermint is sick again this week. i take her to the vet 3 days ago but i think she's not gonna make it this time coz she looks so weak. My mom says i should let her go. now she refuses to eat almost a week. Before i take her to the vet, she keeps open her mouth like yawning or trying to breathe. the doc says she needs vitamin A. Any hope left for me?

Ps. When she sleeps, she tries to struggle like she has nightmare, something wrong?(i drop Varpex on the cotton bud and place it on the dry place near her nose and I think it helps a little)

do you have her in water or is she dry docked?
a) dont let her go like your mom suggested, thats a very bad idea.
b) did the vet give you medication for the turtle other then the shots hte vet gave her. im assuming the turtle has RI, what did the vet give to treat it?

I think you should call the vet and see what he says. It's best to ask him because he's already treating her

What is Varpex?

What kind of set-up is your turtle in? What are the temps of the water and basking area?

Now she is in the fish bowl (I fill little amount of water in it and a rock for her to sleep on ) coz I don't dare to put her in the fish tank, I'm afraid that she'll drawning.

I think my baby has RI too but the vet said it's not RI but she's lacking off vitamin a. well, Vapex is herbal inhalant from Switzerland. ( it made with lavender, eucalyptus, menthol, etc.) it'll help you to breathe easier when you have a cold.

How is she getting the heat that she needs in a fishbowl?

It doesn't sound like your vet has made the correct diagnosis. If after he's been treating the turtle it's only getting worse, I'd find a second opinion from a herp vet. The symptoms clearly are pointing towards RI and the vet should be treating your turtle for that as well.

Well, according to the vet's words, they explain that my baby is lacking of vitamin a because her eyes are swollen and the reason that she is yawning (now she's stop for 2 days and hiccough is gone) because the temps of the water is too cold so her body' system is working slowly and effect her breathing. Now I already have water heater but i don't use it yet coz i think the temp is hot enough for her.

Another thing is, she's already sick when I take her from the shop. Water conditon there is not very well.

Are the eye swollen and/or shut? If so, and if your hatchling truly has a vit A deficiency, get some plain cod liver oil (from a pharmacy), put some on a q-tip and gently rub some on the eyelids once or twice a day.

Take your turtle to another vet to get another opinion as to whether or not your turtle has an R.I.

The bad thing is, all I know there is only two vets in thailand turtle who dare enough to cure baby turtle. I already take her to see them both. They say because lacking of vitamin a. Most vets will looking at me like i'm crazy when I take my baby to them :( . Then can't even cure hamster! My baby's vet is the best vet in Thailand and the bills are quite too much for me coz i'm just a student. Now I only have 800 baht left. (from 4,300).

Is there a zoo that has reptiles or an aquarium anywhere near you? Perhaps they could help.
