My Female laid just one egg this morning. I returned home from work and there weren't any more. I put together a nesting area(I followed instructions from here). Is it possible that she can just lay one egg or do they always lay more? Thanks!

How long have you had it? 4.5 yrs

What is the water temperature? 80
Did you use a thermometer? yes
Are you using a water heater? yes
How much water is in there? 50
Are you using a water conditioner? no
Are you using any filtration? yes

What is the basking temperature? yes
Is there a basking light? yes
Is there a basking platform that is easy to climb on? yes
What kind is it or what is it made out of? floating docks-put the turtles got to big so now they have piping underneath to hold them up so they don't move
Is there a UVB light? yes

What have you been trying to feed it? today
When was the last time your turtle ate? today

How big is the tank/pond/enclosure? 55gal
Is the tank near a window? no
Is the tank in a room with a lot of activity? sort of

Have you read the Basic Care section? yes
Have you searched the forums for similar situations? yes

Is there any other unusual activity/symptoms? laid one egg

Welcome. Is this the first time she's been gravid? Usually they have more than just one to lay; smaller, more "inexperienced" females tend to lay smaller clutches.

You could try to feel her (gently, in the area in front of the hind legs toward the stomach) to see if she has more to lay. They'd feel somewhat like grapes.

Can she get to the nesting box if she wants to? If not, it would be good to watch for any signs that she needs to lay (restlessness, trying to escape the tank, digging motions with the hind legs, for example) and see if she'll lay them.

Also, I doubt this has any affect on the eggs, but your water temp is a little on the high end for an adult turtle. If you can lower it to closer to 75, it would be best.

I do have her in a nesting box now. She doesn't seem very happy to be in it (clawing at the sides). And yes this is the 1st time she has been gravid. I plan on leaving her in the box for alittle while then putting her back in the tank.
