My turtle has brownish dots on his red ear areas on the sides of his head.
The red does not look as vibrant as it used to. He acts happy and healthy and his eyes are nice and healthy looking.. Im thinking there is a fungus or mold on him.

Here are the pics of him on photo bucket
http://s301.photobucket.com/albums/nn71/tplybon/

Water temp: 78 degrees
filter- yes, an expensive fluval one
diet- mostly pellets, he doesn't like greens
He is about 8 years old, his shell meassures 8" long from nose to tail.

Water quality is great now with new filter.
He did have a bit of time in a mucky tank..
What is the water temperature?
Did you use a thermometer?
Are you using a water heater?
How much water is in there?
Are you using a water conditioner?
Are you using any filtration?

What is the basking temperature?
Is there a basking light?
Is there a basking platform that is easy to climb on?
What kind is it or what is it made out of?
Is there a UVB light?

What have you been trying to feed it?
When was the last time your turtle ate?

He is in a 55 gal tank, half full with water, has a turtle ramp
basking heat lamp that he loves next to it
UV light that goes across the whole aquarium

Is the tank near a window? NO
Is the tank in a room with a lot of activity? Not tons.

Could you answer the rest of the questions?

I can't tell what it is on his ears, it does look mottled.

What is his exact diet? He has some pyramiding and the marginals around his head look sharp.

I can't really tell if there is a problem from the pics but I have noticed that RES who have streaky ears are prone to get some dark spots on those streaks.

Skippy eats those reptomin pellets, I feed him every other day.
I have reduced the amount after finding this site and seeing that we shouldnt feed him an amount larger than his head.

his head is longer than my thumb attached to my adult female hand..and wider. He does not like lettuce or other greens I have thrown his way. He is really loves grasshoppers and here in tx in the spring my son loves catching them and tossing them in the tank.

overall, his shell is browner than it used to be, which I think is normal for res. He is around 8-9 years old.

he acts fine, no problems. Just noticed that even his red ears are mottled looking.
