Hi. I have had my Res Squirt now for going on 4 years. I have a very good set up for her - a 75 gallon tank, basking area completely out of the water that she uses frequently,a heat lamp, a uva/ uvb bulb, and a fluval canister filter that I clean out every 3-4 weeks. Squirt eats out of the tank in a larger plastic tub in water since she ismessu. She eats a lot of veggies with calcium and vitamin d powder on them and a very small pinch of turtle sticks. I just need to know if she has a fungus on her shell like I suspect from the other pics I've seen on here. I am currently using hibiclens with a soft toothbrush daily and let it sit for a few mins and then rinse her off. I am going to try to take her to the vet to get some silver sulfidizide or however its spelled. Just wanted to get some opinions on her shell condition.

yeah- sorry, trying to upload pics. :-)

Edit - gallery here: http://img838.imageshack.us/slideshow/w ... 524311.jpg

The pics of her shell are when she has been out of the water for a few minutes and were taken today, Aug. 4th. If you see any dark x's or lines it is from the screen on her tank, those dark marks aren't actually on her shell. I am concerned about the parts that are peeling and very dry and appear to be a different color than the rest of her shell. I am aware that her shell should look moist and not have any flaws if it is healthy and nothing is wrong with it. Her shell has looked like this for the past few months. I did take her to a vet and she had given me some Zymox cream that I did use and then I was in the middle of moving and she got a brand new tank, the 75 gallon one she is in now, and mostly new media in her filter, except the Bio Max. Her water has been clean and up to par. After I had seen the vet and started using the Zymox the shell was looking better, but it hadn't gone away completely and now it has come back more. I was thinking, escpecially since she is in a new tank with all new treated water that it would help and the little bit that she still had would go away but it has not. I was also considering that this may be shell rot, however if you look under a piece of the peeling scute there is no bone showing, and no redness so if it is shell rot along with a bacteria or fungus infection it has not affected her shell underneath the shedding scutes. I am wondering if I need to start dry docking her at night, as that is when she is in the water the longest- when she is sleeping. Oh and one more thing- her underneath is perfect- no spots like on the top of her shell- it looks wonderful. Any advice or suggestions before heading to the vet would be greatly appreciated! thanks! :D

Welcome to the site. It does look like fungus. Unless the fungus is 100% cured, it will come back and is often more difficult to treat. Also, when there is an infection present, it won't go away simply by dry docking, even if you do it for months.

That's what I thought. I am going to take her to the vet this thursday and hopefully get some cream or something to help with her shell. Thanks for the reply. I will let you know how her progress is coming along. :-)

Sorry its been a while, got busy.Just an update on squirt- saw the vet, got an antibacterial spray, using lotrimin ointment for fungus, and she also has been getting shots. The vet did a biopsy of her shell and confirmed that it is fungus and bacteria that are making her shell look so bad. She has gotten better and her shell is starting to look much healthier. We go back to the vet this week for a recheck. Wish us luck. :-)
