Hi everybody i'm Don and new to the forum.

This weekend my wife put bug repellent and sun block spray on my kids. my son who loves turtles decided to play in the turtle tank up to his elbows every day since Saturday while i'm at work. I noticed a funny smell coming from the tank and when i started inspecting it it smelled like a swamp and chemicals. the water was a cloudy murky yellow and my step niece's res(2 inches) that im baby sitting hasn't eaten since saturday and stays tucked in its shell. my 4 and 5 inch res are the complete opposite they're swimming around eating like pigs and full of life. idk if the filter crashed i've done one 100% water change and 2 50% water since saturday and put the baby in its own tank and still nothing

idk what to do any ideas?

Hi Don, how big is your tank and what's the water temp in both tanks? What have you been feeding him?

The main tank is a bare bottom 20 long(temporary) filled to the top with an egg crate atba. the filters a diy internal i made for mechanical and a tetra whisper 20i with API ammocarb. The lighting i have on the tank is a 50w halogen spotlight for basking and a 36w coralife 6500k compact running at 21w. I do four 50% water changes a week with conditioned and aged tap water. While i do the water change i put the turtles outside in a half shaded container for about an hour. They get fed All Living Things Aquatic Turtle Floating Sticks every other day and on the off days they get whatever fresh veggies i have(washed off).

ammo: 0
trite: 0
trate: 10-15ppm
water: 78
basking 90ish

The baby was kept in a bare bottom 10 gallon with a whisper 20i with ammocarb a diy filter with biological media, zoomed floating dock, 50 watt basking light. this was only a temporary tank since i was watching the baby turtle and the media was cycled beforehand with my turtles so definitely no cycle/tank crash.

ammo: 0
trite: 0
trate: 10ppm
temp 78
basking 90ish

Came home today the baby was dead in the water. I noticed the tail with something sticking out and when i picked it up the tail/anus area was swollen and white. thats the only thing i noticed different.

In response to the baby acting weird i picked up a Repti Glo 10.0 26w today thinking that the lighting might be the issue since its a baby. Is the bulb worth keeping to put on my turtles or should i opt for something else. I cant do mvb because of mounting reasons/kids.

hi don. sorry for the loss. as for the tail with something sticking out, can you identify it? maybe the turt ate something that made it act that way.also closely monitor your remaining turtles and see if there unusual symptoms and activities.

they are fine so far i received them from my sis last september. she bought them at about 3/4" from a dollar store here in jersey and kept them for 6 months before i got them and for about a year they stayed about an inch but in the last 6 months one grew to 3.5 inches shell length and the other is now 5 inches in shell length and they're healthy so either i'm doing something right or they're growing too fast lol.

It's possible they are growing too fast, us keepers have a tendency to overfeed them.
