How big is the tank/pond/enclosure? 10 gallons
Is the tank near a window? Yes
Is the tank in a room with a lot of activity? Near one but not in

Have you read the Basic Care section? Yes
Have you searched the forums for similar situations? Yes

Is there any other unusual activity/symptoms? He (?) Avery had a red spot on back of neck when brought him home. Got puffy and white, now not as puffy and brownish. Eyes seem puffy and he is basking a LOT. Let me say we know NOTHING about turtles and have been researching like crazy since we got him and made a panic run to Walmart to try to get what he needs. And that was an accident. The kids wanted to win the giant Minion doll. But we're trying. We live very rural and the vets here deal with cows and hogs, not turtles. One said he doesn know much about them, but is willing to try and take a look. I've already told the kids these little guys from the carnivals don't usually make it, but I don't want the poor thing to die because I'm ignorant. A uv lamp is on the was.but won't be here until Tuesday. The carnie told them to use distilled water, so we have been. Changed once (yesterda since got him and to be honest, that's when I thought he started looking off. I can't tell if when we're by tank if he's not moving while basking because he doesn't feel good or because he's trying to "play dead" to get away from danger. We washed the tank, platform, gravel, and climbing rocks and hiding log with a gallon of distilled waters before we filled it and put him in. No soap. When I changed the water I dipped about half our and added a gallon of distilled water. He gets fed one stick morning and night and one shrimp stick at lunch time. A couple of times there is a stick floating when I go to bed, but always gone in morning. Have been turning light off at bedtime so he gets night until I get the heat bulb that's not a light and is coming with the uv light.House is 70 degrees. Do I have a couple days to try to get the light and see if the uv helps? If the vet admits he doesn't really know turtles, should I take him anyway? Are there eye drops or something I can order and do at home? The only vet that "might" know more is an hour and half away....one way. And i know he'll need a bigger tanks eventually but one thing at a time. Sorry,I know this is long. Like I said,we're trying.

I'd bump up the temperatures a little. The pellet could just be dissolving in the water, make sure you actually see him eat. Any live prey you can give him? Can you post a picture of what you're seeing?

I'm going to try to post pics with this . We've seen him go after the pellets and actually eat. I don't think we can get "live prey" for him. These pics are from last night. His eyes look a little better this morning and we saw him eat his breakfast. He just goes comatose under that basking light. He'll move some to a new spot under the light, but it freaks the kids out because they don't know if its normal or if he's sick or dead. I'm not the most tech savvy but I tried to follow instructions for posting pics on photobucket. Should we get a heater for the water? Some sites say yes, no matter what and some say no, not if you have a heating lamp. Right now we don't have one but I can order one.

Eating is a good sign. A water heater is essential. The basking light might be too warn, what are you using to record the temperatures? I'd remove the gravel when you get a chance (and without stressing him out). Also if you can get activated carbon into the filter or use a whole-house filter to treat the water, then that would be better than the water conditioner. Has his activity level dropped or increase, The white spots on the skin might be fungus, though I'd make sure he has an appetite and has energy before trying to treat it.

I've got a water thermometer on the side of the tank. Using an indoor/outdoor one for the light temp. I'll rig a stand for the light and move it up a little. Maybe that will help. I thought they liked gravel? No gravel WOULD be easier tank to clean though. I've ordered a water heater and some eye drops that will be here tomorrow. I may get a smaller fake plant for him to hide it. That area inside the one we have was the spot most needing cleaning. I appreciate the help!

I raised the lamp up about 8 inches from the screen and he's swimming all over the place!

And now he won't stay out of the water. So maybe move lamp closer?

Can he still easily get to the basking area? I would keep the changes to his tank a minimum as he still adjusting and probably very skittish. As for the temps, yes, move it closer as the warmth is needed to entice him.

Yes. He can get to it. I think he's just a bundle of nerves. Still eating. WIll take out gravel and give him smaller hiding plant when clean the tank this week so not constantly bothering him.

Definitely give him as much privacy as you can, even cover the sides if you can.
