One of my two 8 month old RES climbed out of the tank and fell to the ground (55 gallon tank on a stand) and was picked up by my Lab and dealt quite extensive damage while I was at work. Large portions of the shell are crushed and the little guy is barely hanging on. I have put him into a 5 gallon bucket with a few shredded paper towels for bedding and moved him to the warmest part of the house. After looking online, we put betadine and cream water-based neosporin on the wounds. Unfortunately, getting to a vet at this current time isn't an option. If he's still with us on Monday I will try to find a herp friendly vet in my area (Sunrise, FL).

Any suggestions on what to do?

Should I do anything with my other RES? Obviously prevent future escapes, but my roommate who found him put him back in the tank at first (before wounds were treated) and I'm not sure if I should change the water or anything to prevent a possible infection of the non-escapee.

My dog threw up a few times after the accident. Should I worry about her at all? I know turtles, especially the smaller ones, can have diseases.

Any help would be appreciated...although the outlook is pretty grim.

He needs a herp vet or a rehabber, there is not much you can do and waiting won't help.

I'm not sure about your dog, but you might want to have her checked for salmonella.

Thanks for the reply.

He survived the night and is more active today. Has full motion in all his limbs. We gave him a wash and reapplied his creams. I will try and take him to the vet tomorrow. I checked the bottom of his shell and there are no bite marks or scratches so I'm thinking the damage to the top of his shell was because of the fall (a good 5 feet from the top of the tank).

How should I go about feeding him? Should I take his bucket outside for a bit so he can get some sunlight? I have a couple extra tanks set up that I can put him in but don't have any other heat or UVB bulbs or basking platforms.

You can feed him by placing him in clean water, then adding food. I would not leave him in there long if he's not interested. I would not leave him in a bucket regardless of his condition.

What do you suggest I keep him in for now, then?

Here is a link to minor shell breaks from this site: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4519

Here is another link that describes "Dry Docking" in detail. I didn't get a chance to read it all but it may discuss how to handle injuries such as bites.
