Hello.

I have two turtles since October (they were born at most one or two months before that). They are some sort of Graptemys, but the vet says they surely are mixed with more species (but the predominant look to the best of my knowledge is Graptemys).

One of the them (Merlin) has grown a considerable amount in size since I have her (or him, not sure yet, bur probably her). She is really active and eats a lot.

The other one (Arquimedes) hasn't grown anything since I have her, and has never eaten as much as Merlin, but has eaten nevertheless. Despite this, around a couple of weeks ago, she started to eat much less and became less active. She doesn't want to swim anymore and passes all day sunbathing under the heat bulb. I even have to take her to the water frecuently since I don't want her to become dehydrated. I've also spotted some mucus in her nose (I saw a little bubble twice) and some kind of white-translucent strings (similar to the dead skin that hangs off their body, but different) hanging near her mouth. She hasn't eaten for 5 days or so because she doesn't want (I've given her fish, squid, ham, chicken, her own food... But she doesn't want any of this).

Last Tuesday (2/2) I took them to the vet. She said they (both) needed calcium and vitamines, which I have to inject them based on the guides the vet gave me. Apparently, she saw their poop was weird and found out they are infested with parasites. She injected them the dewormer (is that how you say it?), which I have to inject again in two weeks.
For Arquimedes (the sick turtle that doesn't eat nor swim) the vet gave me an antibiotic which I also have to inject. Two days have passed since I took them to the vet and since Arquimedes began treatment, but she's not recovering nor hasn't eaten anything either.

I don't know what else can I do. I can give her all the treatments as possible but if she doesn't eat, there's no way she can recover from this.

Do you have any advice I could follow? Have you got any idea of what she may have? The vet said it probably wasn't pneumonia, but the possibility is still there. I've noted she floats lightly submerged to one side.

And also an extra question. As I mentioned above, they got dewormed two days ago. Do I have to change the water right now (they can be parasited again from the water)? I mean, where are the parasytes located in their surroundings? As a side note, the vet told me that they were surely already infested when I bought them, meaning they didn't catch it in their tank.

------------------------

Thank you so much. I copy paste below the questions the topic "Read this Topic before you post here." suggested:

How big is your turtle? Around 4 or 5 cm.
How long have you had it? Since October 2015.

What is the water temperature? The heater is set at 29ºC.
Did you use a thermometer? I don't have a thermometer (I will buy one though). The temperature is the one to which the water heater is set.
Are you using a water heater? Yes.
How much water is in there? 7 litres.
Are you using a water conditioner? When I change the water (once a week), I use a liquid that neutralizes the chlorine and all that stuff, if that is what this question asks.
Are you using any filtration? I use the EHEIM Mini Flat filter

What is the basking temperature? I don't know.
Is there a basking light? Yes.
Is there a basking platform that is easy to climb on? Yes.
What kind is it or what is it made out of? Is this one http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/91wSWZYAMZL._SX522_.jpg but in the small size.
Is there a UVB light? Yes.

What have you been trying to feed it? Yes, obviously not by force but by presenting her with the food.
When was the last time your turtle ate? I think around 5 days ago or so.

How big is the tank/pond/enclosure? It's full capacity is 15 litres or so.
Is the tank near a window? No.
Is the tank in a room with a lot of activity? Yes, in the living room.

Have you read the Basic Care section? I haven't.
Have you searched the forums for similar situations? I haven't.

Is there any other unusual activity/symptoms? I think I covered it all above.

I'd be worried too. Are they kept separate? Was the poop actually analyzed by a lab? I'm not saying I disagree with your vet, but it's just a bit vague. There are different kinds of parasites and they need different treatments/medications. Is her eyes open? Is she alert?

For a RES reluctant to eat, try using a small container and soak her in unflavored Pedialyte and water (1:1) and leave in some crumbled pellets so when she drinks, she might eat a bit.

You can also try live prey, like a small minnow and hold it by the tail and let it wiggle in front of her face.

Hello Steve, thanks for posting.

I answer you by parts:

They are together in the same tank, as always. Do you think I should separate them? The vet didn't say anything about this, that's why I haven't done it.

The vet analyzed the poop through a microscope. She said there were multiple types of parasytes. The dewormer she injected them is called Praziquantel.

The sick turtle is always sleeping so her eyes are most of the time closed, but if I take her to the water or to eat, she opens them.
No, she's not alert at all since she's always sleeping.

One thing I want to make clear is that they are not RES, they are Graptemys mixed with some other species. I think I may have posted on the wrong subforum.

Today should arrive an order I made of vitamins (NEKTON Multi-Rep). I will put some in their water when they arrive.

About putting the food on her face, I've done that already. It was not a live prey, but I also put it right in front of her face and she didn't want it.

Sorry for the double post, but I forgot to mention something.

In the tank there are also a java fern, a marimo (these have always been there since I have the turtles) and a mangroove root (this has been there for a month or so).

I don't think this is important, but just in case.

If one of them is contagious, then yes separate them. Praziquantel is for tapeworms. Map turtles are similar to RES, so I think our information should be applicable. The main thing right now is to entice her to eat, I would be pretty aggressive with that.

I don't know if she's contagious or not. I suppose she's not because then the other turtle would have gotten infected already. But, in any case, I may separate them just for precaution.

Yes, I know the most important thing is to get her to eat.
She hasn't eaten either today, although I think she has not slept as much as previous days.
I mean, she hasn't been swimming, just basking or in the water (not swimming), but she was awake and not asleep (most of the time). Maybe that's a good sign.

I'll try to make her eat something tomorrow. The vitamins arrived and I also have a new type of pellets. I'll continue giving her fish and squid as well.
But I can't force her to eat so, if she doesn't eat this weekend, then I don't know what to do :S

I'd try the Pedialyte/pellets trick as well as live prey. You may have to consult with the vet about force feeding.

My little baby Arquimedes passed away yesterday afternoon.
She had pneumonia.

Thank you for your help anyway. Regards.
