General Care Discussion :: white string poop?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Thu May 03, 2007 10:24 pm

If tommorow you can take her. Then fine. Just remember to save that white stringy thing! And show it to the vet..

She may look fine now, but not for long..the earlier you get this mess treated the better.

Good luck..

It looks like parasitic worms to me. The vet will need to give you medication to get rid of them. It looks like a pretty bad infection too, so sooner would be better. Has the turtle eaten feeder fish or snails recently?

Oh, yea I figured you wouldn't be able to get a vet this late. If they can see him tomorrow that's great.

Yuk, Steve, is that a tapeworm?? :X

I think it does look like tapeworms in the picture, and Steve has the right type of worm in his pic too. The vet tomorrow will really want a stool sample. If you can get any stool sample, normal or white, do it becase he or she will need to ID the parasite to give the most affective treatment.

I feel terrible, how did this happen? I really thought I was taking good care of them, they've made me really happy since I have them...

Anyone know what could've caused it?

It was probably already inside when you bought the turtle.

Probably... I went back to the store the other day... They had a filthy tank with little water and NO lighting at all and I even saw a dead one floating around... I've been thinking of reporting him... anyone know who to contact for this?

Anyway, I found this:

Internal parasites are rarely a problem with aquatic chelonians. In large numbers the intestinal parasites can be a problem. Treatment for internal worms should only be done in instances such as: if the individual is passing visible worms, if it is a hatchling from a suspect source, or if the individual is eating well but is losing weight. To treat for these parasites, allow the turtle to dry out for a couple of hours and then place the turtle in a solution of piperazine for about thirty minutes. Consult your veterinarian in any case of intestinal parasites. Never give any chelonian ivermectin or any solution containing ivermectin. This is the equivalent of turtle euthanasia.
