Right now I have a 48" tank but only 24" florescents so theyre across the tank sideways and not doing such a good job of lighting. I also have 100 watt flood heat lamp. Im going to buy a proper 48"cover for the tank tomorrow. It comes with 2 48" full spectrum bulbs. Heres the thing:I have 2 choices which one do you think is better:

1. Getting the kit as is and buying some kind of UVB heat lamp or
2. Try to haggle with him to get 1 full spectrum and 1 UVB florescent (or pay the difference).
The reason I ask is because is there any reason to have the uvb bulb across the whole tank or just above the basking area.

It is only really necessary above the basking area, but the water will filter out the UVB. I have the same problem with my males 72 gallon bow front, huge light for about a foot of basking area (and I have 1 UVB light and one full spectrum in the fixture). I would try to get a UVB included, but I doubt that they would go for it.

Couldn't you buy a 48-inch fixture at a place like Home Depot and get a Reptisun for it (I've read of people doing this). Then add a clamp heat lamp. With turtles, I don't see why a full cover/hood would be necessary.
