Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Hi again- so we did the partial water change about 4 days ago and have not yet tested the water. I have a strong feeling it is not improving and I am very concerned. I apologize if this is an old topic but Clyde is shedding his skin excessively. It does not look right at all. His left foot has very bad shedding and the skin is not all clear some of it still appears gray like his normal
Skin tone. His floating dock also keeps getting build up on it. It is a white crust that forms st the water line. I hope someone may have some answers here because I am afraid the excessive ammonia may be damaging Clyde now. Thanks

Here are the best ones I could get of his foot. It is hard to tell but a large portion of it seems to be peeling. There is also one of the white crust on the dock where it meets the tank wall. I thought ammonia was supposed to effect a turtles eyes but his seem really normal.

Was you tank or any of it's decorations part of a salt water tank at any point? To be safe I'd remove all unneeded decorations but the dock. Just to be sure nothing is leeching minerals into your water.

Re-test your water and also test your water straight from the tap. I have a feeling your filter is still cycling, sometimes hard water slows down the cycling process which normally takes a month and a half.

Nothing was previously used in salt water but we did have rocks in there from someone else's tank that held fish. It has probably been a month or so since they've been out. We will take out the other log hut decoration and test his water. This house has hard water but there is a softener system in place. Thanks for the advice and we will get back with an update.

Dried up shed skin does make a mess on glass and on anything that meets the water line. As for the pics, it doesn't look abnormal though clearer ones might help. He also looks like he has shell fungus.

Steve may have a point about the fungus. Can we get a little clearer picture?

We took him to a herp vet in our area and she said he didn't look Like he had fungus. That was when his shell looked suspicious about 4 months ago And she gave us a cleaner thing to scrub his shell with and dry dock for an hour a day. It doesn't look great though.

Definitely need a clearer pic. Perhaps it's nothing but in 4 months it could become a fungus. My Sheldon had the same problem, what first started as a calcium deficiency (he had it when I got him), quickly morphed into fungus, because he wouldn't bask.

Just an FYI, I saw two vets that didn't think my turtles had fungus and I sought out the correct meds for them. Just search for fungus on the forum and check out pics... most people will report back with updates after treatment.

ok- thanks for the tips on that we will look into it also. i tested the water again as asked- it has been 8 weeks with the set up. i have removed all objects other than his dock. the set up is still the same fluval fx5 in a 75 gallon with about 2/3rds full. i have not changed any media besides the carbon bag. the media set up is as recommended by this site. to that end- should i change any media or clean any?

water straight from the tap used to fill tank:
ph- about 6.6
ammonia- yellow probably about 0 ppm
nitrite- 0 ppm
nitrate- just about 0 ppm

tank water:
ph- very pale yellow so about 6.0
ammonia- very dark green still so 8.0 ppm
nitrite- pale blue so about 0 ppm
nitrate- pretty good orange color so between 20 and 40 ppm

last water change was about 40% on 12/25. previous tests had some nitrite which was encouraging but now it is back to 0. very confused. like i said it has been 8 weeks. where do we go from here?

another quick question we want to add a bubbler to break up the water surface on the opposite site of the output valve and oxygenate the water. should we wait or will that no matter with this process? thanks

I don't think it will matter.
