Spots is still in the 55 gallon, and I think she's doing ok in it. But I would really like to get her a bigger tank now, and give her more room. We've had her since May of 2012, and she's gone from the size of a half dollar, to 6 inches today. I don't love the narrow tank she's in now, so I'm looking at a 120 gallon. I know it's at least a gallon per inch, so my question is, is it possible she'll outgrow the 120, and if so...when?

I hate to upset the balance now...the filter is working, I have no issues with clear water, and I don't even have to clean it that much. I'll have to upgrade with a new tank, I'm sure.

Anyway, her pics from today:

Very few female RES grow up to 12". 9" seems more likely (I need to revise some of the info on the main site) so I would not worry about her out growing a 120 gallon. With that much larger of a tank, you might even have to do less maintenance on it once it's running.

Did you ever figure out your heater? Now another problem you never stop to amaze me!

I have not decided what to do about the heater. The two suction cups on either end of the heater are only a month old, so I don't think replacing them is going to help. I keep looking at the heater guard, but not only is it $30, shipping is expensive too. Then I look at the magclips, and see only one comes in a package...I did take all four suction cups out, scrubbed them, and soaked in hot water, but they still only stayed attached for about an hour.

I *think* Spots is a girl, bit she's only about a year and a half old, so I'm not sure if her claws will get much longer, and I haven't been able to check under her tail well enough to tell. I don't want to have to upgrade the tank again. My partner is going to want to hurt me already when I tell her we have to get a tank more than double what we have. ;)

I'm not sure about theone I was looking at on cl. The dimensions are 60x18x24. I'd really like the tank a little shorter, but wider. Not long and skinny. But this one does have a stand already. I need to compare the dimensions to the current tank tonight, but I may keep looking.

Yeah those clips only come one per package and I also think that they might not fit your heater? As far as a tank goes I definitely think wider is better than taller. Have you considered an in line heater?

I had no idea those existed, I may look into them more when I find a new tank.

If the magnet heater guard seems expensive, the inline heater is 2-3x the price.

Yes, but maybe more worth it than a piece of plastic and some magnets? It's not the expense I mind, it's that it seems expensive for what it is. I'm using a Sunsun filter and an eheim heater.

I shop E-bay. What one are you talking about Steve? The only guards I have seen use suction cups.

I ordered one of the magclips on amazon, it was $8.88 and free shipping. It works! So now I've ordered another one bc I'm OCD and I'd like the heater to be level.
