Habitat - Indoor :: Change of terrapin's diet

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Hello! The reason for making such a long first post is because I think I need help urgently.

My RES is slightly above 1 year old, but it is already about 6 inches big due to overfeeding. When I bought it, I was told by the shop owner that the supplement pellets are good enough, and before I realise it, it has grown so big. I am using the brand “Everyday” which is from Taiwan as that is the only brand that shop carries.

My setup is a 3ft tank with Eheim 2213 canister (shown in the photo). An exo-terra basking lamp is recently added because I shifted the tank away from the window. My terrapin used to bask with direct sunlight. I will be adding a UVB lamp as well.

I am recently trying to change its diet and is feeding it about 10% pellets and 90% romaine lettuce. It is eating fine, and the poop is not as smelly as before which is great, but the thing is that after pooping, it will swim about and this breaks the poop. The poop mainly consist of the lettuce which had already turned dark brown and some will sink to the bottom of the tank whereas the a good amount floats on top of the water.

My main reason for getting a canister is to effectively clear off it's poop, which had served me well until I changed its diet recently. The canister seems unable to suck out the undigested vegetables effectively, and the tank looks "messy" with the vegetables flowing about since my terrapin is swimming about. Because of this, I had to suck out the messiness manually every day and it's like indirectly doing partial water change. Of course this is a bit tiring and I don't think I am doing the right thing.

My question is whether it is common for them not to digest their food well and how can I improve my situation of not having to clear the poop every day? I don't have such problems previously with the supplement pellets. The poop just breaks down and gets sucked in by the canister in a few hours.

Thanks in advance and I appreciate any help!

It's normal for the poop to be messier. If it's very messy, then I would cut down on the amount you're giving her. Things that will help… more water, better filtration and an extra circulation pump.

Hi steve, really thankful for the reply. I have introduced a circulation pump and also feeding her less. The pump is working very well and breaks down the poop effectively!

2 months gone by and everything is fine, but since two weeks ago till today, she has choked on her romaine lettuce at least once every 2 days. Initially I have her big pieces the size of her head, without the vegetable core, she choked. Then I chopped them into smaller pieces and she still choke. Now I just revert to the bigger pieces but watch her carefully during meal time.

She tends to eat very "greedily"...fast and in big mouthfuls. When she choke, she will pull her head in and out of the shell, just like what a human being getting fits will behave. The worst scenario happened once, where she flips over by herself and keeps turning. I had to bring her up to the platform to rest for a while before she jumps back water to continue eating. Really worried something might be fundamentally wrong, but it only happens during meal time, so I deduce it's due to eating too fast.

My female RES easts in a similar way. I usually spread the lettuce when I put it into the tank. You might when to introduce a second feeding as well.

Many thanks and glad to know! I do spread the lettuce so that she needs to travel a bit before getting the next bite.

Sounds good. When mine doesn't get fed on time she starts splashing water all over the place.

Exactly! At some point, I was wondering if mine knows how to look at the clock.

Yup, she'll know exactly when breakfast and dinner is. She'll even stop basking and wait in the water for her food, even if she hasn't seen anyone for hours.

Hi There...

Sorry, I can't help but notice her basking platform. I think I have the same one from Ikea for my study. The material is steel right? Worried that it may rust and become harmful for ur little one...

You are right, and it did cause a bit of rust as my RES tend to scratch the surface. I have since then change it to a full plastic platform that is safer. :)

Same here! And then she'll climb to bask again like nothing happened :)
