Hello. I recently bought a new water heater for my RES. He is over a year old. Sadly I do not have a thermometer; all I know is that the water was too cold for my turtle before. He has been standing on his dock despite the lamp not emitting too much heat (but still much warmer than the water). After installing the water heater, my turtle seems more comfortable in the water.

However. I've read that having the water too warm may cause a turtle to have excessive growth and other side-effects. How long should I keep the water heater on? All day? Or just at night when he usually goes to sleep?

My dad seems to plan on leaving the water heater on all day, since winter is here and and outside temperatures are dropping. I'm just worried that leaving the water warm all the time might hurt my RES.

Update: My dad now plans to unplug/turn off the water heater in the mornings and only plug it in at night. I'm not sure this is a good choice, because the water temperature will drop in the mornings and rise at night. I checked the label on the box, and it's a Tetra H10 50Watt Submersible water heater. A red light will turn on when water temperature is below 76°F and the heater is in the process of heating. A green light will turn on when water temperature is between 76°F and 80°F and the heater is finished heating.

Leave it on all day. If you set the temperature to let's say 74° the heater will turn itself on and off to maintain the set temperature. Why don't you have a thermometer?

My heater has a light that lights up when the heater is on and goes off when the heater shuts off. Like Kansasslider said, the heater should turn on and off to maintain the temperature of the water, kind of like the way your AC at home clicks on and off based on where you set your thermostat. Thermometer's can be really inexpensive and they're good to make sure your heater is working the way it's supposed to.

Great question. I updated the Heater FAQ to include this.

I don't have a thermometer because my dad constantly says it's useless and refuses to buy one. This is dumb because the RES is my turtle, but my dad is very self-confident when it comes to taking care of a turtle. I've tried looking for one at my nearby pet stores, but I haven't seen any (not even on the tanks holding fish in the stores). I'll try to check again when I have time.

I checked the box of my water heater. The water heater keeps the water temperature between 76°F and 80°F. I tried looking on the box and online to see if it turns on/off automatically. I've only read that a red light will turn on when the water is being heated (if the temperature falls below 76°F), and a green light will turn on when it has finished heating. Does this count as turning on/off automatically?

Thank you for the update! Unfortunately I think my water heater has a pre-set fixed temperature (between 76°F and 80°F). According to the box it has a built-in thermostat, but I'm still confused whether the water heater turns on/off by itself.

Apparently my dad plans to unplug the water heater during the day and plug it in at night, after he found the water to be too warm in the morning. Plugging the water heater in and out would cause the temperature to drop and then increase again.

Yes the thermometer will turn on and off if it's a fixed temp thermometer. Unplugging it seems sort of silly. The thermometer will guarantee the temperature does not drop below 76. Usually the fixed temp thermometers are set to 78 but they aren't very accurate so they say a range of 76-80 on the package. Yes your water temp may be higher during the day especially in a small tank because the basking lamp can add heat to the water. The heater in that case would just remain off.

If you have good equipment, you may not leave a thermometer in or on the tank but it is nice to have one for spot checking temps. They aren't very expensive.
