Hi. I have had my RES, Crowley, for almost a year. I just got him in a new large tank (i believe its about 50 gallons). My brother is telling me I should really just buy the Viquarium, but because of the price I am a little hesitant. Is it really worth it? Right now I have a waterfall/rock 2 cartridge filter in the corner and he has a basking dock. I kind of like all the openness of the tank right now and don't want it to look to cluttered. Any particular advice or ideas? I have looked at hundreds of photos but just cant seem to find something I like.

Also, his shell has patches of a whitish color. Because of the hard tap water from living in the city. I have changed to just buying purified water. Are the patches treatable?

Doesn't sound worth it at all. Try to maximize the amount of water in the tank, so you should switch to an external canister filter.

The whitish color could be fungus. Pictures would help to confirm it.
