Congrats on your female RES laying the eggs and feeling relieved now. Did you see copulation or what signs indicated to you personally observe that she was? For sure, would love to hear also about further details also.

About a month ago she was acting eratic. Trying to get out of the tank and using her hind legs to dig on her basking rock. I took her outside a few times to my garden and she dug holes but never laid eggs. Then she stopped all the strange behavior so I didn't really know what was up. Then a few days ago I came home to find 8 eggs in the bottom of the tank. I don't know how long they were under water so I discarded them. My Map and dbt are always chasing her around so one of them might have bin the culprit?

Those look pretty good! The malformed one looks pretty interesting. Is this her first clutch? How big is she? When my RES had her first clutch, the eggs were like peanut m&m sized.

Very interesting on your observations prior to her laying these eggs , your attempts on providing her a location prior to laying the eggs, the hybrid activity observed on your males chasing her as well as how the eggs looked even after being in the water. It is a shame on the loss of the eggs but it will occur again soon enough. Hopefully it will not end up like this on the next clutch so that you can see the little ones pop out. Being that I am looking forward to producing albinos, lubinos aka leucistic red ears and hybinos, possibly other genetic morphs, from individuals like what you experienced will help me determine which way to go. I know the breeding of snakes and lizards like the back of my hand but turtle breeding is a all new ball game sort of speak so knowledge prior and experiencing with other species is essential prior to my little guys getting mature. I thank you highly and I am happy that she is okay.

Steve, she is 6 1/2 inches long. And yes it was her first. Thank you Tampa. Anyone know how long the eggs can be in water and still be hatched? I might try it next time. The one egg that looks deformed was a normal egg with something else attached. My girlfriend thought it looked like an umbilical cord? They were pretty big really couldn't believe she had all of them inside her. What a trip that was!

I found this link that I will post below . On the educational link you will read " If you find turtle eggs in the water, unless they were just laid, they probably will not hatch but you can always try. Infertile eggs are more likely to be dumped in water or bare areas than fertile ones ". Turtles like egg laying snakes and lizards, once depositing the eggs, have a 60 to 80 day incubation period before the babies hatch out from my previous knowledge from Megan, a close friend of mine from the old vets office.

I hope this educational link helps you . I reviewed it closely myself.
