Individual scutes may start to look metallic, a sign that it has began to lift and has air under it.

The shell will look dry and scruffy...so to speak.

Skin or scutes? You will see the edges of the scutes start to lift.

they dont look smooth like they were before and hes doing alot of basking lately like the octagon? shaps on his shell look raised

Don't know what you mean by the octagon, but it sounds like he's starting to shed his scutes.
