Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Tue Aug 08, 2006 8:22 pm   Need New Tank & Filter -4- 6inc RES

Hi There

I have learned quite abit over the pass month or so here @
the RES Turtle Talk Forum.

I'm in the look out for a new setup for my 6inc RES and filter
which does not require a lot of maintenance and hassle.

Please also note that i do not have alot of room in my room lol
but my single RES will go in to a pond next year in the garden.

He will only be using the pond in through spring and summer
and will be indoors.

I would like perment indoor tank for when he grows to an adult @ 9inc
in shell size.

Many Thanks, Jagz

Any further information let me know. :)

Anything you go with is going to have some maintenance. If money is no object, I would go with a tank that is large enough to suit him for life. At this point, I don't think you want to do another upgrade. Assuming that he grows the full 9 inches, a 90 gallon tank is what you are going to need. (I don't know if they make 90 gallon tanks either?)

Since space is an issue, could you build something to meet your needs? I don't know how handy you are...I know it isn't an option for me. There are several websites that offer instructions on how to build your own tank, and what supplies to use. I know that a couple have been mentioned on this site in the past, if you do a search.

For easy cleaning, a python and a good filter. I love my xp3 and it's a breeze to clean and maintain.

Yes they make 90 gallon tanks. That is what mine is.

Like missi said you will need at least a 90 gallon space. I use an XP3 filter with mine and it couldn't be any less maintenance or hassle. I just clean/replace media once a month. That takes about 10 minutes. You will also need to clean the tank about once a month and do partial water changes every 2 weeks or so. Cleaning the tank usually takes me about 45 minutes to an hour. I use the python which makes it much easier.

It seems it am run'in out of options due to the following below..

1. 90 Gallon Tank [Too Expensive]
2. No Space For 90 Gallon - Only 60 Gallon Max

I might look in to building my own tank and cabinet but my last resort will
have to be a max 60 Gallon Preformed Pond or Tank due to room space.

If you opt for a pond, you would need much more space since they are wider and not as deep as a tank with the same volume. If you can get a stock tank, you would be able to use that indoors too if you can bring it inside.

A 90 gallon tank really doesn't take up that much room. Tanks are expensive though.

You can get a 100 gallon stock tank for about $70 which can be used indoors. A 90 gallon tank will be about 50" long but can run you more than $250.
