Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Hello all! I'm new to the forum, and wanted to find out some information about canister filters. I've never used one, and have very little aquarium experience, but I've heard that they're very good for turtles. I'm looking at either the the Fluval 304 or 404.

Can anyone hook me up with information about them? How often do the canister media need to be changed, and how difficult/disgusting is it? I have to feed Gamera in the tank - taking him in and out regularly isn't a viable option - so a lot of waste is generated compared to say a fish. Also, if anyone has a picture of a canister filter set up in a tank - I can't even imagine how to set it up looking at the filter online.

Oh, my tank - 45 gallons, about 3/4 full, with a single 3" two-year old.

Thanks in advance. If there's a great site that already answers these questions, feel free to just point to it.
