Habitat - Indoor :: My tank won't stay clean!

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Fri Sep 08, 2006 9:57 am   My tank won't stay clean!

I have a 100 gallon size tank for my RES and she seems to be very happy and healthy. I also have an algae eater, a crawfish, and two rosy minnows in the same tank. A week after I clean the tank, the water turns a murky whitish color. How can I keep the water crystal clear for all my critters? I change the filters about every two weeks. Any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks!

How much water do you have in the tank? What kind of filter are you using? What kind of water conditioners are you using?

I keep the tank pretty full, about 3 inches from the top. My filter is a Penguin 350 BIO-Wheel Power Filter made by Marineland for up to 75 gallons. I use Tetra EasyBalance water treatment but it doesn't seem to do any good.

The filter is probably your problem. Turtle tanks need a filter for about 3 times the gallons actually in the tank. A filter made for 75 gallons in a 100 gallon tank probably isn't going to cut it. You should really invest in a larger filter. I don't really have experience with big filters- maybe someone who does can give you some more advice.

Sounds like new tank syndrome. Read more about that in this thread

And yes you need a much more powerful filter. For a 100 gallon tank you should be using something like the Rena Filstar XP3 at least.

I would also take the crawfish out. Remember anything in the tank will become lunch for the turtle. The shells on the crawfish could hurt her when she eats it.
