I'll feel more comfortable doing that once he's not a hatchling anymore! :) Do you think at 2 inches I can sweep up the bathroom floor and let him wander in there for awhile?

Sure! Just make sure he can't escape under the door of the bathroom, and you may have to put a sign on the outside of the door to let other people in your house know the turt is loose inside there (so he doesn't get stepped on).

I love the slipper behind the toilet idea for the free range turtle. That is so cute! I plan on making a few hidey holes for them in case they are scared dring thier travels. I am looking very forward to next summer too when I can free the wee beasties in the yard!

Glad you like the stories! There are times when Sheba acts more like a dog than a turtle (like when she follows me around & wants to climb on me).

I'll have to take a picture of Sheba's big plush shoe behind the toilet so you can see it. I swear that was the best thing that was ever invented & Sheba loves it. Of course, it helps that the bathroom is always a few degrees warmer than the rest of the rooms becuase it is a small bathroom.

I will tell you that turtles love stuffed animals on the floor too. If you have a pile of stuffed animals (or even a beanbag) on the floor, the turtle may dig her way underneath them and go to sleep too (or try to climb the animals & get to the top of the pile). I used to find Sheba sleeping under the beanbag all the time! Makes it easy to find them when they need to go back into their tank.

I think I'll do some of that this afternoon when Brandon gets home from work- so I should put lots of stuffed animals and possibly a slipper on the floor? :) no water needed? how long can he be out like that?

Mine are a little under 2" and i'd love for them to be able to wonder around my room, but the problem is it's carpet, i could put them in the hallway or something... Any ideas? Just thinking for their future.

Whatever you decide to do, just make the guys are rinsed thoroughly before going back into the tank.

If you have a plastic container on hand, you can use tap water (around the same temp as your tank water).

can you dunk the plastic container in the tank to get some of that water out so you can rinse them off in that then dump that water out?

p.s. I asked this in another post I think but I didn't get a very clear answer- Memphis water is supposedly some of the best and doesn't have any chlorine in it- do I still need to condition the water?
