Habitat - Indoor :: New.

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

I was just recently given an res, which I named Ozzy. Ozzy's about 6 inches long. Not sure how old or what sex. So far, I have a 40 gallon tank, a uvb lamp, and an infrared heating bulb in a clamp lamp that I use as a basking light. I need a water heater and filter, and some more stuff (substrate, basking area, etc) for the tank. Suggestions as to what specific brands/models to buy would be great, since I know pretty much nothing about this stuff. Kind of looking at the cheaper end of things, since I don't have a whole lot of money to use right now. Thanks.

For starters, going cheaper will be more expensive in the long run. I tried it, I know. Second of all, when buying things, you can save some money by planning ahead. If you know you are going to upgrade in the future, then some things can be purchased bigger in the plan of an upgrade.

For some great ideas, I would check out the photo gallery. You can get some great ideas just by looking at what other people have done.

zoo med products are great ways to go... You could probably get a medium or large size dock, and putting that under your lights will do you well. Substrate should just be some rocks you go around and find, that will be bigger then your turtles head so he wont eat it. There is a sand that can be used but it seems to be kinda expensive...

Other then that, fit to your liking, because your turtle will fix it to his too.

Just know with turtles they say that your filter should be able to turn your tank over 3x per hour. Check out the Filstar filters at petsmart.com http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_ ... 30059&Ne=2

You can pricematch anything at PetSmart instore, from their website. this will help keep the cost down.

If you have a 6 inch turtle then your 40 gallon tank is already too small. Did you measure the turtle based on the the length of the shell or total length including head and tail? We measure turtle by shell length not including the curvature of the shell.

And as was mentioned before going cheap now will cost you more in the long run. Your turtle is not done growing yet. Males will grow to be 7-9 inches and females 10-12 inches. They need a large tank and basking area. Above tank basking areas are a great way to free up space in the tank and can be built for little money.
