Terribly confusing--the first time I did a web search I think I used DYI as well (somehow it looks better). :)

TexasJagsFan,,
I have a 55 gal tank and my son and I did do the dirt thing. We thought we would offer them a choice of land or water, well they never went onto the land. We would set them on the dirt but they did not like it. We just cleaned out the dirt and it is still divided with thick plexi-glass but now we have feeder fish on that side and the turts now cross over on their floating dock and go get their fish or just to play in different rocks. I will get a new pic soon. If you look back in the photo forum you will see how it was with dirt.

Looks really nice.. and they clmib over the dock to get the fish?? Sure would be a great way to feed them in a place other than the main tank without them freaking out :)

I do have a ? for you though... how close is your dock to the lights?? I'd be afraid they'd get burned or climb out of the tank. (But then I'm paranoid LOL)

I am watching them closely. of course i am not there all the time. i am moving the dock to the back, the light i keep trying to get it to not be so close but the lamp keeps dipping down. it is one of those bendable lamps. i am working on finding another way to have the dock/ heat lamp and the top of the tank in the right set up.
but yes, all 4 turts go back and forth. the babies are too young for the feeders,they get mealy worms. it does help with the feeding mess.
Thanks for all your nice comments!

turtlehaven..
just looking at;
http://photobucket.com/albums/a359/tutl ... lor070.jpg

you realize that when your turtles get big enough, your going to have to get rid of all the "goodies" you have in there, eh? especially the gravel.. and for sure the castle.. that could be a real glass breaker. FYI..

but it is a very good idea to split the tank from te inside. keeps the structural itegrity of the tank intact..

I had the same idea you had and I tried it out. I used acrylic to make a four legged stand and tray design. I used it for a couple of days but found it still took up too much room. Since it was pretty heavy with rocks and pebbles, the legs had to be at each corner of the "tray" and that constricted the space the turtles had to swim. Now instead, I use 4-1" legs put closely together in the center of a flat 4" by 6" acylic board (where the basking area is set up). This way it leaves space all around the basking area and only takes away about a 2" box size shape in the water.
I have photos below. The picture titled "Cooter Basking" shows a picture of the setup.
