I've had the filter since the middle of January. I've got a lot of Stars in one basket and a lot of premedia rings in another, and a lot of larger ceramic rings in another basket. I mean I know its wrong to do a whole 100 percent change but that seems to be the only cure.

When do that entire change I clean the filter out nicely and do the water change the water is crystal clear for about a week or so. Then randomly it will just go nuts, the whole thing will be exactly how I described it.

Cloudy, bad smell and the filter itself seems to slow down as far as the output into the tank.

But I think it may be very wise to invest into a water kit and really find out whats going on.

Thanks again guys. I'll keep you informed! :)

When you clean the filter, what are you doing with the bio media? Rinsing them out under tap water, which is generally chlorinated, will kill off the bacteria. Letting it dry out isn't good either. A 100% water change with chlorinated water can also cause a die-off. Let us know what the test kit says!

If you've had the filter running since the middle of January, how many times have you cleaned it?

When you "clean the filter out nicely," do you rinse the biomedia in the tank water and then put it in tank water (a separate bucket is good to have for this purpose) until you're ready to put it back into the filter and start the filter running? Do you rinse out the sponges in tank water as well and keep them in tank water until they're ready to be used?

I rinse the media with the tank water, in order to keep the beneficial bacteria alive. I just can't figure out whats up.

Since Janauary I'd probably say I have cleaned them about 8-10 times.
