As I learn things (and I seem to do so often with this turtle) I like to post what I learned because I figure at least one other person is probably running into the same situation I am.

As for lighting I just recently replaced my old 5.5 inch dome reflector light with household bulb and 18 inch fluorescent UV light with a 10 inch dome reflector (with procelain socket) and I got one of those 100 watt T-Rex UVHeat bulbs. So far it's working out great and the turtle loves it.

Hmm, I think we might be talking about similar things, Marisa- the spots I am talking about are incandescent, they are just coated somehow to reflect inward and downward. I know some people who use halogan lamps as heat lamps for their herps but I've never done so. :)

This could just be different terminology, then. I use a red heat light in one set-up, and these can be purchased as spots (narrow focus) or as regular incandescents (looks like a regular lightbulb). I prefer the latter.

Have only seen a regular lightbulbs called incandescents. The incandescents you referred to above are probably what I'm thinking is track lighting (the bulb is coated to reflect the light/heat downward). They're also a different shape. I'm using a 65-watt Reveal with a reflector dome in one set-up and a 100-watt track light (size of course varies with the size of the track light, so this one is much smaller than the Reveal bulb) without a reflector dome in another set-up. The bulbs are positioned next to UVB lights. I've also used regular lightbulbs with reflector domes, though, and haven't had any low temp problems with them (just adjust distance to get a good temp).

The mercury vapor bulbs come as spots and as floods (I remember you used somewhat different terminology in another post). I prefer the latter for the greater light they provide and for the more gentle heat they seem to give off.

Sheba, I don't know why, the temp, with a 5.5-inch reflector dome with a 100-watt bulb that close to the turt, could be so low...
