Oooooh!
So after being excited to put this together I realized that..
a. The intake filter tube is actually too tall for my tank, which means I have to cut it with a hacksaw I don't have.
b. I cut the intake hose a bit too short so even if I kept the filter tube the standard size, the hose might pop out :(
c. I did not realize there is not filtration media in the box.

This has been another expensive experiment with me, your host.
WOO!

Back to the pet store tomorrow. >.>

What exactly is the Blue FX5 sponge pad and the filter floss?

Thanks for all the help guys :D I am definitely new to this. All I want to do is give my turtle the best home I can.

This shows how to set up the media and explains what the filter floss might be used for.

I think I might see how the intake filter works at the default size in my tank. It will have to rest on the bottom of the tank for now.
Hopefully the hose wont pop out since the intake filter tube is a bit too long.

If it doesn't work well I will have to borrow a hacksaw from...somewhere.

Did you have to cut the intake filter tube or was your tank big enough?

Finally just ordered the filter media since the pet store didn't have what I was looking for. I might see if I can find someone with a hacksaw to cut my intake tube. My tank stands at 16.5 inches and the tube+filter is 17. Just a bit too tall.

Yeesh! That thing is almost as big as my shop vac! At this rate, I'm going to have to move to a 3 bedroom apartment so I can have a turtle room as well as a cat room!

Welp I finally set it up.
Bought a tiny hacksaw and cut the intake tube. I didn't want to cut it too short so until I get a taller tank I will have to deal with its current size.

Home Depot didn't have any heavy wire shelving that was wide enough for my tank. I'll have to scour around different stores.

So far so good. I turned the outtake nozzle against the tank so the current wouldnt kill my poor turtle. Ill change the water later tonight.

How often should I drain the canister? I was thinking once a week.

You won't need to drain the canister every week, maybe once a month. I've let it run for three months once with no problems.
That's a beauty of a big canister filter, less maintenance.

I clean mine once a month. You dont need to point the water flow at the side of the tank. My turtles play in the current :-).

I've been running mine for almost 2 years (22 months) without any cleaning or maintenance. Water is still crystal clear and tests perfectly, flow has reduced a little bit, but still sufficient for my 75 gallon tank.
