Boiling water evaporates pure water and condences heavy metals The longer you boil the more they condence.I just bring it to a point right before it reaches boiling point. Even if it boils your better off using it than water from a hot water heater. The reason being lead. Led solder wasn't banned till 91 and hot water going through your pipes picks it up.That's why you shouldn't use it to cook with. You should also let your cold water run for a while before using it especially if it has not been used for more than 6 hrs.My house was built in 76 so I know for a fact lead solder was used.Even new plumbing parts marked as lead free can have as much as 8% lead in them. I had to do a bit of reading to find all this out.I also don't use hot tap water because of how long it might have been sitting in the water heater.Yuck!

Are brass fittings ok? They did not have 3/4 x 5/8 nylon fittings.

The sink adaptor that come with the Python is brass. It'll be fine.

I've been using filtered water for the last year or so...I don't want to take a chance. Anyway, I've already bought the python and the filter. With the amount of water I won't have to buy every week, I figure it will pay for itself in about three months. But I wasn't sure if the brass would be too hard for the plastic of the filter.

What kind of filtration system? Single cartridge water filter? Just remember to use plumbers tape on the threads so they don't leak.

I'm definitly going to try the cold water for my turtle- I've been using warm water from the bathtub faucet because it's fast and didn't know that it made any difference. Only question is: What should I do about all the white build up on my tank? Do I need to buy a whole new tank? Also, I have a small water heater that brings the water temp up to 77 and keeps it there- it's not an adjustable deal- the box said "keeps water at 'ideal' water temperature for turtles" :p Do I need a new heater to heat all that water?

The white buildup is just calcium or lime deposits. Vinegar will get it off. But you will have to empty the tank. Here is a link for how to remove deposits.

Not sure I would trust that heater. You can buy an Aqueon or jager on Amazon pretty cheap. You want one you can adjust. Bigger wattage than what you need for your tank size is also ok. The Jager tends to be a longer heater. I like Aqueon. because they are smaller and have a lifetime warranty.

Brass fittings are fine, but more expensive. I use brass fittings on my beer brewing rig for the water filter and yes definitely use teflon tape for both the nylon OR the brass threaded fittings. Most every faucet we drink water from has brass fittings. No harm in using brass for water supply other than a little extra damage to your wallet.
