I'm not sure if this will help, or help for the next time, but you can get 'Flo-and-go' siphons at the hardware store. They're just hand pumps to make filling lawnmowers, etc easier. I have an Eheim 2213 cannister that didn't come with a starter. Luckily, I was able to use some tubing to make an adapter to fit the output bar to the siphon and just pump water through the entire filter.

I use the siphon to transfer the water into a big gasoline jug when changing the tank water. There's an auto-shutoff mechanism to prevent over-filling but it doesn't seem to work. So if I don't watch it, I'll end up with a floor full of tank water.
