What do you mean by integrated filter? Can you post a link or picture so I can get a better idea what you're thinking. I was thinking sand might be the easiest to keep clean in the basking area. I figured it would be at least 1 1/2" deep, being in the planning stage I can easily adjust that.

If you're going to form your own pond, I'd make the filter integrated into it. I'd also consider some substrate for the basking area if it's large and deep enough. And Stacy, that thread was supposed to be a managed one... never had time to go into it further, but will eventually.
