Yes its sand. What you see on the ramp is actually anti slip bathtub tape stuck onto a piece of 1/4" plexiglass. Hope your turtle enjoys the ride lol

Ironically the anti slip stick ons that I have in our personal tub are turtles. Does that mean I should get little people stick ons for the turtle ramp?

Filter question. I mentioned that I have a Hayward ec65 pool filter on my current tank. It seems to do ok. I have no earth in it and it is slightly icky to clean. I admit that I found it roadside on bulk garbage day. Obviously not its intended purpose. I can't backflush it but I can run water through the filter area and down the drain, so the big chunks come out. Anyway I noticed that Kansasslider had an FX6 filter so I looked that up. Then I said I think I have one of these. Not exactly. I have a tetra bio active pond filter. It goes with the outside pond which is 3000 gallons more or less. Last year we stopped using it. It didn't really seem to do much for the pond but it is not the filters fault. We put the pond where we wanted it, not the best place for it. So it is under trees, has rocks lining the edges down into the water which hold organics, on a normal rain the yard runoff will go into the pond. On a heavy rain the pond disappears under the water that is passing by. So it is not exactly a closed system. I know what the pond needs and that is a different topic. My question is would it be better for me to use the tetra filter than the hayward? I run a 1000gph pump now in the turtle tank. That is undersized for what the tetra specs call for. I think that is mostly flow for back flushing. I am guessing that 1000 gph is way low for a pool filter too.The tetra cuts down water flow by about 45% which is why we don't just put it in the outside pond in case it helps. The waterfalls are a lot prettier with the extra water flow. So right now at 12:17pm (subject to change) I am thinking that I'll go with the tetra but plumb it with soft lines so that I can put something else in its place if need be. If I want to use the tetra outside again and the turtle world is going ok, I could probably get a real reptile tank filter.

I think the tetra would work. How many gph does it filter? How many gallons does your new tank hold?

I am going to have to find it and check. My pond is 3000 gallons so it least their medium size which I think is 2500 gph. My new tank is 300 gallons max so maybe 1/10th the size of the outside pond. I know the pool filter is very restrictive. Enough so that there is 10 psi of pressure at the inlet. Probably 100-200gph at the outlet. I'll do a little testing. Is this where I mention that I also have a uv filter assembly for my outside pond that I am not using?

Might as well use it also. Just have to hook it up and see if it turns your tank into a tidal wave! Can you agjust the water flow if its too strong?

I'm sure If I have too much flow I can divert. Right now, full out with the pump discharge pretty much parallel to the side of the tank, the water slowly swirls around the oval. If I have too much flow I can angle the discharge up more and have more of a fountain then a jet. I could even put in that waterfall...

@kermath - what kind of sand did you use? I don't know much about paint, but marine grade paint and drylok comes up a lot when dealing with fish or turtles.

Do you mean what paint did I use? I haven't used any sand. The paint I used was Pentair 2 part epoxy. It is safe for pets and aquariums. I don't know about other products.

Oh. It was sand sand. The same stuff I put under pavers and my cat likes to roll in. I don't have anything against sand. Is it in tanks just for looks? The way my last (current) tank was setup, when we cleaned, we rinsed and vacuumed everything so anything on the bottom of the tank got sucked up. It just added to the mess. The new tank with the sloped bottom & drain will hopefully work a lot better. If the crud on the bottom can makes its way to the drain, the tank should be alot cleaner. On that front I checked to see what I have in stock. I was wrong on my current pump. I thought it was 1000gph. It is actually 2000gph. Jebao EGP-2000. My pond filter is a Tetra BP4000. Plenty of capacity for the turtle tank. That pool filter I am using now really chokes down the flow. The pump was originally for a secondary filter system on my outside pond. The beach that I had was separate from the basking area. Notchie didn't show much interest so we took it out. The new basking area could be some rocks and some sand. I think it will be about 18" x 36".

I did the plumbing yesterday. I have plenty of water flow. Way more than before. The only leak I have is from the tetra filter top. It looks like there should be an o-ring all around the top and there isn't one. I'd hate to think I lost it and haven't found a manual that says there is/was one. It looks like I can buy an o-ring kit for $40. I'll send pics tonight. I actually have to get to my job. Ron
