Thanks Steve. It took over a month to finish, but its not that bad...probably close to 10lbs. Its basically Styrofoam covered with a thin layer of hydraulic cement, and that is covered by an epoxy resin (which is NSF Certified for use in potable water applications).

Hello Everyone!

Here is my ATBA made from things laying around the house, the dollar store, and home depot.

Now that I know how to make it, I plan on building a new ATBA slighty larger for a nesting area.

Post Posted: Wed Nov 23, 2011 9:09 pm   Help!

Hey guys! I'm in need of a larger basking area for my 2 turts. Right now I just have a small rock decoration for the two of them. Its pretty lame and in need of updating. Ive seen all the pictures on here and they are amazing! But I dont have enough time or money to make such extravagant above-cage basking areas. I was hoping to make something simple and natural looking out of some pvc and plexi? Any ideas?

Heres what ive got now....its a little sad :(

Feel free to give suggestions on how to make the tank better. And how in the world do you guys get your tanks so full? I run back and forth from the bath tub filling an old kitty litter containter with water and dumping it into the cage!! It only gets about half full before i get tired!!!

It won't look "natural" but a PVC/tile platform looks good in most tanks. What about cork bark? It is highly recommended if you can find one that will fit your tank.

Here's my 60 gallon with my above tank basking area I built!

The basking area, I use the plant to hide the suction cups a little more.

I got a bit creative on this one and used aquarium safe silicone to attach the two floating docks together with plastic strips off of our old tomato cage.

Looks good. You might want to remove the gravel/smaller rocks in there.

They're actually not as small as they look in the pictures. The cleaning is a hassle, but I'd much rather deal with that then have a bare bottom.
The only problem I have is not having a top on it cause my cats like to jump in and drink from the filter! And from my understanding the mesh like tops filter out the UV rays, so I'm looking into getting creative again for that. And of course a new larger tank for my female, Ella!

Any Rock that is smaller than his head should be removed. I'd look into sand... it looks better and is easier to clean.

is there a diy basking dock i can do? i feel like there's too much space between the light and the basking platform.

Tomorrow I'm putting my turt in his new tank. This is a picture of his old basking spot (that was always partially submerged) on top of the new one that took 2 months to build. The picture doesn't do this bad boy justice.

squirt, I would probably not go my route, but instead use pvc and essentially build a cube. Lay a slate/stone tile on top and you're pretty much done. You only have to find a creative way to build a ramp. I made two in under an hour and didn't spend $20. I was just experimenting and didn't really know what I was doing at first, however, the pvc dock I made was way better than anything I could buy. Im sure someone here can give you more specific details. Good luck!
