I am SO CLOSE I can taste it!!!!

I hope no one has dial-up cause this update has 37 pictures in it.

Anywho, on to the mayhem!

Started off the evening by attaching the basking light socket to the cabinet.
Image

Pressed it in place.
Image

Added some glue to the back.
Image

Here's both installed.
Image

Now it's time for some electrical work!

Worked on running the wiring for the in-tank lights. Here's the wires coming straight out of the rear socket.
Image

Far too long. A little snip and...
Image

I used crimp on butt connectors (yes, that's their real name....you can laugh though. :D ).
Image

Crimped.
Image

Both ends.
Image

Took the spare wire I had laying around and cut the two conductors apart.
Image

Began stripping one end.
Image
Image

Stripped.
Image

Inserted into the butt connector and crimped in place.
Image

Both wires securely spliced together.
Image

Wrapped in electrical tape for that added protection and paranoia. ;)
Image

Stapled the wires to the inner wall of the cabinet and began to route the wiring.
Image
Image

Here's the rear socket routed under the decking support towards the front of the cabinet.
Image

Did the same procedure for the front socket.
Image

Here's the switch I'm using. It's supposed to be a loose inline switch for a lamp or something similar. I'm going to mount this sucker.
Image

It's guts.
Image

I drilled holes through the existing screw holes but drilled all the way through the plastic case.
Image

I cut the negative side of each set of wires short.
Image

Twisted them together.
Image

And attached them to the screw post in the switch. I also at this time attached the cord that will be connected to the power source to the switch.
Image

Here's the completed switch mounted.
Image

Cleaned up the wiring and finished the run from the switch.
Image

The switch is accessible from the right cabinet door. View from the outside of the cabinet.
Image

Plugged her in, screwed in a couple bulbs and.....
Image

Next I worked on the basking sockets. Pretty much the same deal wiring wise minus the switch. These lights will be plugged into a timer set for 12 hours each day. The in-tank lights will be turned on when we want them on but will largely be left off.
Image

Connected power to the basking lights and...
Image

Attached a power strip to the right access panel and plugged in both sets of lights.
Image

I had to cut a little notch in the bottom of the panel CAREFULLY so the power strip's cord could exit.
Image

Finally, here is the right access panel installed.
Image

And the left.

I must confess that as I sit here and type this, the cabinet doors are also installed but I can't post pics of that yet. I ran into a snag. The doors don't completely shut. I will have to buy magnet catches to hold the doors shut. I'll take pics tomorrow when I get that done...I promise. ;)

I am SO STINKING CLOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I doubt I'll get sleep tonight. ;)

IT....IS.....FINISHED!

WHEW!!!!! It's done. I wish I could fill it with water now! Got to wait til the weekend for that.

Anyway, here's all I got done today:

Started off with a problem. I actually mounted the cabinet doors last night, but I discovered that they wouldn't stay closed! Frustrated, I ran up to Wally World but they did not sell magnet catches and Home Depot was closed. Today I bought the magnet catches and they work great.

The problem:

The solution:

And here it is (finally) with the doors installed and closed.
Image
Image

After this, I dropped in the decking.
Image

I wanted to make the underside of the basking cover a little reflective and keep it a bit cooler as well. First, I applied some glue.
Image

Grabbed the Aluminum foil from the kitchen (don't tell my fiance!).
Image

Lined it up and used a roller to smooth it out.
Image

Then I trimmed off the excess (sorry for the blurry pic).
Image

Here's the cover installed.
Image

And now, the finished product with the tank dropped in!

The small hole under the window is the drain plug hole and will have a drain plug installed.

All in all, this has been the funnest project I have ever done! I had a BLAST making this thing and put in some late nights doing it. But I think it paid off and if this project motivates someone else to give it a try, AWESOME! It really wasn't that difficult or complex to build and I didn't use any specialty tools.

Thank you all for being so supportive and complimentary! That really kept me going in this. If ANYONE wants the plans or design for this to make their own, I'm more than happy to share. :)

Thank you! I'm going to add some cabinet hardware to the faux drawers and doors on the front to really finish it off. I should be moving it into the house for the first time either tonight or tomorrow. Will definitely keep y'all posted on that!
