Decided I am going to also do a large area to bask so that my four turtles can have a good amount of area to work worth while basking.

I do realize the will grow considerably.... my plans are to get a much bigger tank in 2-3 years or when they have reached a uncomfortable length.

I am going to be trying to incorporate two sliding doors as previously seen. I want to try to use a plastic lid that accepts the UVB bulbs I use.

But the rest will be constructed of wood and will be matched to the base.

Also would like to incorporate some sort of hole to allow for a funnel so when the water gets low I do not have to take off the lid.

These are current pictures.

Here's mine i did recently (i'm still excited about it!), it's got the benefits of an above tank basking area (i.e. i can fill the tank up all the way) but it was a lot less work and it doesn't look too obtrusive.

What type of silicone did you use to seal the edges? I know some release certain chemicals and wander if the heat from the lamp would affect that at all..

This is my sketch at the moment. I really like the sliding door ATB so I can still access the tank without removal. Just gotta find a place to get plexi glass or anything the like.

Any hardware store should carry plexiglass. Not the kind you'd use to build a massive aquarium with, but definitely something you can use to make an abta.

My son and I made one with superglue and plexiglass we got at Home Depot. It's pretty ugly, but it freed up lots of tank space.

At least you spelled it right, unlike me in the post above you.

ATBA = Above Tank Basking Area.

The idea is to create a basking area out of the tank. It gives you more tank real estate, without moving to a bigger tank. It also let's you raise the water level higher, if you were worried about your turtle crawling out of the tank from its in tank basking area.

I don't like the ATBA name... I prefer to call it The Penthouse!

Check it out my turtle's penthouse here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=32566

That was still in construction... now it's finished and she absolutely loves it... will post pics soon!

yesterday my sister freaked out when she noticed that Dumbork wasn't in the tank -- she thought Dumbork jumped and escaped. she texted me that Dumbork was actually in the "second floor". :D
