Hello everyone !!
sorry I have not been on here for a while.
Spending alot of time potty training my 3 year old son and setting up the new tank. I got a 55 gallon from somebody who had one that they were not using so they gave it to me . Very nice people. I got it set up, I have 3 filters going in it ! yes 3. I have a aqua tech reg fish filter that is for up to a 60 gallon, then I have a repto filter and a submersable supreme 400 canister filter. I figured wouldnt hurt to use them all. got a slim line fully submersable 200 watt filter, I put a bubble wall in it this time and since it was so big i couldnt do the water fall i had set up in the 10 so i just made a little rock bridge thing ( put 2 sides up then just put 1 across the top of the 2 ) . I had bought some feeder guppies and put them in . there was 6 and now there is 4 and has been 4 for a long time. I dont think he can catch them yet. but hey he is getting alot of exercise! he is now eatting his pellets. He actually loves them now. so he is eating great compared to when we first got him and he would only eat plankton. oh and I got the dock and lights up in the tank to. I will post pictures as soon as i can get some good ones. Kermie is still used to me he comes and greets me as soon as I walk over . I hand feed him his treats so he gets used to me. I cleaned out my turtle sand box we had and filled it up and put rocks in it and put kermie out in the sun. He just loved it !! my son just thought it was cute that he was a baby turtle in a big turtle. My dog still is jealous of kermie. Everytime we go over to the tank to feed him or what ever as soon as we talk the dog comes over and jumps up and looks in the side and scares the heck out of kermie! our dog is an 80 pound big dog so kermie sees this big black monster appear!! everything is going great since you guys helpd me out with everything, unlike my best friend who got the turtle for us. she had 3 kids so she got 3 . the kid are 9, 6 and 2.
I passed along all the info you guys gave me and what the pet shop did to. Told her about the tank , the lights, the filters, heater, I even told her about this site and how much you guys have helped me. Well for some reason she was not to worried about what i said becuse she had a cousin who had 2 turtles and she knew what she was doing. First she argued that she didnt need a heater, then she said that the sspecial uvb lights were crap and a house hold bulb was good and that you turn the lights on at night and turn them off during the day !!! i know ??? what??? I told her first why would you do that when you want to make it just like it is outside. She finally said ok I see your point and without saying anything she went and got a heater and a uvb light bulb on E BAY. well next thing I know she calls the kids are all crying mommie killed our turtles! She said that the guy said he pre set the auto set heater so she wouldnt have to so she just put the heater in and didn't check it for about 2 hours or so later. well she cooked them !!!! when she came in she said her 2 year old asked her why all thier heads were stuck in why they wouldnt come out . she then noticed that they were dead. she checked the waters temp ( so i guess she didnt have the thermometer up like i said) and it said that it was 110 degrees. When I asked what she set the thermometer at she then said the guy did but in the same sentence she said it was bran new never opened. who knows what it was set on and me knowing from having fish aquariums no matter what you set it on you still check it constintly to make sure it is working right. Well i guess now she knows! well once again thanks alot for your help everyone, AT least my kermie is still here from you guys helping ! I felt so bad for the kids they were heart broken. so I will post pics as soon as i can. michele

There is no submersible heater that I am aware of that can have a temperature pre-set that high. I use a very cheap heater with my fish and the thermostat can overheat a small tank if incorrectly set.
That said, I would avoid buying any bulbs over ebay. UVB bulbs need to be replaced about every 6 months, so anyone can be mislead into buying used goods.

The guy told her that he pre set the thermometer to 78 so when she got it she didn't have to do anything but put it in and turn it on. I know and most people know to still check the temp in the tank continuously untill you see it is right and holding what temp you set. Some people listen to the people who sell them the part and unfortuantley alot of people dont tell the trurth.
I have bought all my stuff from our local store or DR. smiths and fosters or big als. If I am not sure i ask you guys. hopefully alot more people will find you guys so they dont have to have these kind of things happen to them !

That is a horrible story, I hope that she doesn't go out an get another set of turtles, I would hate to hear that it happened again, poor turtles :(

I have read on the heater box on my water heater that it says it is preset to whatever, and I have also read it on the sites that sell them, I am glad that I was too nervous about cooking my turtles, I am sure I checked at least 40 times to make sure the heater was working right, after that, I only checked every other hour :)

I for the life of me do not understand this "pre-set" description on heaters when they have thermostats on them with numbers and dials to adjust the temp. (I've noticed the cheaper ones don't have numbers, just an arrow to increase the heat.) A heater should be put in the tank water and left for about 15 minutes prior to turning it on to give it time to acclimate to the water temp. And the temp should be checked against a thermometer. The thermometer was evidently malfunctioning--do you happen to know what brand she bought?

Sorry to hear about your friends turts, but am glad to hear Kermie is doing OK.
