I have my RES's in an indoor pond and am considering artificial plants, primarily floating ones. Do they prefer lots of plants, so they can hide, or do they like open water more?

Less sociable RES may appreciate more cover. I think most RES may enjoy it as it can make it more interesting for them.

Mine love his plants. I bought him one that attaches onto a rock and he is always in his plants. So I say go for it!

I have 2 large plastic plants with suction cups stuck on the sides of my tank. Both my res like to rest and sleep on them. They're made for lizard tanks but they hold up quite well in the water.

Will the basking area be one they can hide under? If so, I'd probably go with less than if it wasn't. My RES tends to like ones that are long and move in the water with the current.
