Habitat - Indoor :: Got a new set up

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

I went to Petsmart to go and get the new filter today and I remembered what Carol has always said about price matching so I went online first to see how much their Aquaclear 50s were going for and they were only $19.99. When I got to the store, they were $29.99 so I showed the woman the print out and sure enough, they gave it to me for the $19.99.

I was able to get extra media for it and I even decided to upgrade the turtle tank just a little bit more and got a 30 gallon, which also came out cheaper because of the PetPerks card. Its only ten more gallons but it was actually all they had besides tanks that went into the 100 gallons. I decided to take it since someone had said on here before that ten more gallons doesnt seem like much but it does make a difference and it really did. Here at the house, the tank looks huge and my turtle looks so small in it. It looks like shes in an ocean!

I bought the nice paper background and a new dock as well. My turtle is horrified though. She has a such a vast area to swim in but she insists on only one corner. Shes scared of the deep water and even though the dock I got her is exactly the same as the other one, I positioned it a little different in this new tank and she hasnt been able to find the beach part even though its right in front of her so shes insisting on going up the sides. lol I didnt have to silicone the dock holes either because of the bubbles because they are far away on the other side of the tank so now her dock moves freely up and down. Her lights also fit better and more directly above her and close together.

I know its best to get the biggest tank right away but Ive been having to do it little by little but its worked out. The filter seems to be working good so far. Its for up to a 50 gallon tank so it should be efficient. Its much smaller so I think it will be much easier to clean up and the media comes in three packs and are very cheap so I can keep up with changing them without a problem. All in all, everything seems to have turned out pretty good. Ill keep everyone updated on how well this filter works out for me.

Sounds good! (But I have to say, that with a 30-gallon tank, the AquaClear 70 might have been better. I just posted elsewhere that there has been no media lifting since I first noted it. I think that once the media gets saturated with water and therefore heavier, the pressure from the filter isn't quite enough to lift it. But, try the 50 and let me know how it goes...).

30 gallons for one turtle should last a bit .. :) Glad you did the price matching and you got to save some money. As you know and have read/heard a ton of times on here, it just takes time for them to adjust. Did you put any plants in the tank even if they are just fake ones that can float in the water, it's something for them to hang on to until they get used to the deeper water.

Belated Merry Christmas to your RES :)

I wonder if Petland does the price matching thing..course I think their website doesn't have any products on it...

I know Walmart won't price match! I went in there and the lady goes..yeah it's 20 bucks cheaper on our website but that website doesn't including the shipping costs. I said yeah like it's going to cost me 20.00 for shipping..I don't think so. But I still bought the stuff anyways cause if you want it badly enough you'll pay the price for it....

Yup, everything is fine so far. I would have gotten the 70 but I was freaked out about it lifting. Too bad I didnt get your post on time about it not lifting anymore. Oh well, Im going to try this one out for the mean time. I think it should be fine.

I didnt get any plants because the last time I had plants in there, the slime that was growing on them was incredible. It doubled my tank cleaning time and I guess the slime started making them slippery and they began coming out of the little holes that hold them together. My turtle hates them too, she kept trying to swim fast and they would be in the way so she would fling them to the side or have to slow down and go around them. So I have a bare tank but the picture in the back makes it look full. :D

My turtles shyness went away and so she is paddling away. She finally figured out how to get on the dock and has been diving for hours. She really loves the extra room, she is swimming incredibly fast. She also sits in the bubbles as she always liked to do but wasnt able to the past few days.

I do have something I wanted to ask about and I dont want to make another thread since Im here already, its about shedding. When I didnt have the filter these days, there was an enormous amount of skin in the turtles water. It has to be skin because normal water does not develope that massive amount of transluscent flakes. It was so much, you could hardly even see the turtle in there. Is that normal? I see no shedding on her body though but the water was full of it. I started wondering is that didnt contribute to the 110 being so clogged as well. The water and basking areas are the right temp, she shouldnt be shedding that much should she? I think Im going to begin feeding every two days instead of every day.

I think most stores that do pricematching it has to either be their own website or another local store. I know our local petsmart plus will price match with local stores, but our Petsmart is like 40 minutes way so therefore not local. Would save a lot more that way... wouldn't have to spend all that time and money on gas and driving :) You can always ask though. Never hurts to talk to customer service and see if you can't sweet talk them into making a sale even if they aren't making the huge profit. Once you get in there, you're likely to buy other things :)

I use the Aquaclear 50 in my 29G. It does pretty good for two Baby RES. The water is usually clear and I barely have to change it although I do add in water because of the evaporation. You should try looking at the classified sections in your local newspaper to find cheaper tanks. I bought the 29G at Petland for $35 but I bought a 55G w/ reptile cover on eBay (local pick-up) for only $30. I'm always trying to look for those fish tank deals on eBay or other places like Craiglist. Works out for both parties (you and the seller). One needs to get rid of it while the other needs to obtain it.

Oh good, another user of the Aquaclear 50. Thankyou for your response and Im glad that its working out well for you, that means it should do its job for me also.

The thing I like best about this filter is its size. Its so small that I wont have to struggle to clean it at all. I wouldnt mind having to clean it often if it did what the 110 would do because cleaning is a snap and not back breaking like with a heavy filter. The 110 held a gallon of water easily in its canister so it was tiring to clean. I had to always put a bucket near it so I could drain out the water to be able to lift it away from the tank.

I also have to add water because of the evaporation.
