Habitat - Indoor :: water depth

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

hi
i'm new to this forum and i already find it quite useful. i have one question though, i have 2 turtles (1.5 yrs) and I used to have a smaller tank before, 10 gal. I recently upgraded to a 30 gal tank and I think my turtles enjoy being in shallow water, they kind of like to be in the water and be able to stick their head out without having to swim.

Should I fill the tank the most I can and they'll get adjusted to it or have they somehow lost their ability to swim since I'd always had them in shallow water?

Thanks a lot for your help guys,

martin

Well, I don't think they ever lose the ability to swim. I just got 2 res that are 10yrs old and have lived in a 15gal tank with only 3 inches of water their entire lives. They are now doing very well in a 50gal tank filled 3/4 with water. Fill it up but do it gradually. I only filled the tank with about 5 inches of water for the first day until they got used to their new home, the next day I filled it right up :-)

It won't take them long to adjust to it. Make sure to add some resting spots under the water and some at water level.
