Habitat - Indoor :: 150 gallon tank made from scratch.

After some careful research on monsterfishkeepers.com i have built a 150gallon tank from scratch for only about $300 instead of paying $1000.00+ for a store baught one i got all my calculations and measurements and went to the glass shop down the street and had him cut me some glass peices the tank measures 6-1/2 ft long and 2 ft wide and 18 inches high. siliconed it all together on a saturday morning was very fun to do. Also i built the tank stand myself too and saved about $500, the tank now has been up for about 2 yrs and still going very strong. heres a pic,



heres a pic of my turts had them since they were the size of a nickle and they are now about 5 inches,





due to some curcumstances we had to move to an apartment and its an upstairs so i could not bring a 150 gallon up there without it falling thru my floor the landlords floor and down to the basement lol so for now untill we get a house they are in a 55 gallon filled to the top with an above tank basking area. heres some pics i also built this tank stand myself and saved $230

The tank looks great! My brother helped me make a 125 gallon for my RES, though in the end it probably would have been cheaper to buy one

maybe you can help me. i have a year until im switching rooms but when i do ill need to build a stand for my 65 gallon aquarium with dimensions 18 W x 36L x 24H and i am having trouble designing a stand for it

heres what mine looks like
you can model it after that 4 4x4s 1 2x4 around each 4x4 and two pieces of plywood a quater inch thick on top n bottom

I posted a few pictures in this thread about proper construction for a stand. You want to make sure the weight is properly distributed throughout the structure since it is a fair amount of weight.

Look at xfallwithmexo's stand above. What would make it stronger? Mortising the upper horizontal 2x4's into the 4x4 legs. The vertical 4x4 legs should have been notched so that the 2x4's sit in them... wood on wood construction. Then the weight of the tank is distributed through the 2x4's and very soundly down into the 4x4 legs of the stand. Remember for a glass aquarium, all of the weight is supported by the bottom RIM of the tank. Right now that stand has much of the weigh supported by the screws or nails. Plywood will flex, making it bow like a smiley face and put a lot of sheer on those screws / nails. Adding a vertical support brace between the upper and lower 2x4 would also transfer that weight properly and distribute it down to the floor.

Build your stand as strong as possible.
